The Humanities Center, with the generous support of the Global Education Initiative, is pleased to present a special screening of "The Boys of Terezín" documentary. Meet five remaining survivors, reunited 65 years later at the premiere of an oratorio that gives musical voice to their lost friends’ extraordinary poems. Introduced by Mina Miller, Artistic Director of Music of Remembrance, a non-profit organization dedicated to remembering Holocaust musicians and their art through musical performances, educational programs, musical recordings, and commissions of new works. MOR is the only independent non-profit organization in the world with this comprehensive mission. This event is free to the campus and the community and no reservations are required. Poetry Series Event: T. Miller & National Day of Silence
Tuesday, Apr. 16, 2013 12:00pm - 1:30pm
Location:
Jackson Center
T. Miller is the voice of wounds exposed, and the healing balm of poetry applied to the human spirit. The passionate 27 year-old Detroit native is a writer, performance poet, author, publisher dedicated activist, producer, actress and an aspiring motivational speaker. Since her debut, just over four years ago, Natasha has proven to be a poetical powerhouse. After one year on the performance circuit, in 2007, she was crowned Detroit Poetry Slam team’s Grand Slam Champion, and has been a member of four National Poetry Slam teams. She has also been a Women of The World Poetry Slam top five finalist three out of the last four years once ranking as high as the third female slam poet in the World. Come join us Thursday April 18, 2013 at 12:00pm in the Jackson Wilderness Auditorium to enjoy part two of our poetry series!
We are also celebrating National Day of Silence here on campus. The Day of Silence is the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network's (GLSEN) annual day of action to protest the bullying and harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students and their supporters. Students take a day-long vow of silence to symbolically represent the silencing of LGBT students and their supporters. We ask that you respect the individuals who are participating on this day. Please come to the Student Activities Office for any additional information.
For more information contact Raven Conyers, Diversity/Intercultural Awareness Coordinator, at (425) 388-9505, or SAO Advisor, Lindsay Hudson at (425) 388-9509.

Location:
Everett Civic Auditorium
Who: Student Programs Board, Student Clubs M.E.Ch.A & Black Student Union What: Platanos Y Collard Greens Where: Everett Civic Auditorium 2415 Colby Ave Everett, WA When: Friday, April 26, 2013 @ 7:00pm Cost: FREE! Audience: EvCC, students, staff, faculty and the Everett community.
Everett Community College Student Activities Artist & Lecture Series continues to present nationally and regionally known artists since 1982. Through the Artist and Lecture Series, Student Activities aims to enrich EvCC students, as well as the community, with culturally abundant and diverse programming. This series aspires to enhance the community by exposing them to programming that is embedded with themes of culture, social justice and global issues. We seek to spark thoughts and conversations that complement the EvCC mission to create a culture of respect, advocacy and engagement for all. Many artists have entertained and educated EvCC students, staff, faculty and community members throughout the years of the Artist & Lecture Series. Among them are lecturers Gregory Hines, Sherman Alexie, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and musical/ theatrical performances that include Mystical Arts of Tibet, Harlem Gospel Choir, Ballet Fantastic and Faces of America.
This Year Programs Board had the unique opportunity to work together with two diversity student clubs M.E.Ch.A and the Black Student Union to present, Platanos Y Collard Greens, as the 2013 Artist & Lecture Event.
With a passion for social justice David and Jamillah Lamb, a husband and wife super duo, have poured their hearts and souls into scripting and producing this thought provoking play. David was born and raised in public housing in Queens. Despite the adversities that his socioeconomic class presented, David worked hard and graduated from both Princeton University and New York University School of Law. Even after accomplishing a very successful career, his passion for the struggles and stories of his Queens neighborhood continued to speak to him. He wanted to tell stories that captured the social and political issues facing African Americans and Latinos in New York. Just as successful as her husband, Jamillah graduated from Wesleyan and Harvard University. With his wife at his side, David set out to answer the question “why is it that we can dance together and party together but we can’t love one another?”
Platanos Y Collard Greens is a hilarious hip-hop infused romantic tale which focuses on the cultural divide between African Americans and Latinos in present day New York, and asks if love between the two can survive. This play tells the story of two star-crossed lovers from Hunter College, “…a Black man and Latina who are forced to defend their love against cultural and racial prejudices of their families and friends.”-New York Daily News. An almost bare stage gives the audience free reign for imagination. The audience gets a history lesson without realizing it, as historical facts are enriched with outbursts of rap, moving poetry and slang. “Platanos Y Collard Greens is an eloquently written play that motivates today’s youth to address issues of race, color and systematic injustices that effect minority communities.” –Black Student Union, Hamilton College.
Please join us on Friday, April 26, 2013 at the Everett Civic Auditorium to watch Freeman and Angelita fight to protect their love. This play is guaranteed to inspire you to think and make you laugh. EvCC Student Activities is proud to invite students, EvCC staff, and community to this year’s Artist and Lecture Series Event.
