Come out to The Safe Zone Birthday! You’re invited to celebrate The Safe Zone Birthday and recognize National Coming Out Day! The Safe Zone committee on campus, founded in December of 2000, supports LGBTQIA+ members of the college community and provides a safe and welcoming environment for them. Displaying the Safe Zone symbol shows support for the community, and communicates that it is safe to talk to the person who displays it. The symbol is also welcoming to LGBTQIA+ members of the community. Countless colleges across the US have Safe Zone committees, and Everett Community College is proud to be one of them.

At the event, there will be many festivities for your enjoyment, including colorful decorations, free pins, and free birthday cake. Those who attend have the opportunity to learn about the Safe Zone and converse with volunteers about the Safe Zone, National Coming Out Day, and their histories. There will be free custom-made pins and glow-in-the-dark bracelets available for taking after signing a banner to show your support. Either a pin or a bracelet may be taken, but not both.

Join us in the Gallery with Raven Lachell Taylor is a spoken word poet from the Seattle area. Support Domestic Violence Survivors through the Clothesline Project

Before the age of 18, 1 out of 3 girls and 1 out of 5 boys will experience incest or sexual assault. This statistic is astounding, and also horrifying. Research has shown that survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault are more likely to be depressed and contemplate suicide. Any person on earth, regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, culture, religion, education level, marital status, or employment status can experience domestic violence and sexual assault.

Event Summary

  •  Monday, October 13, 2014: The Clothesline Project drive will take place beginning the week before The Clothesline Project on through Thursday, October 23, 2014. Donations will be placed in the donation bin in Student LIFE in Parks Student Union. A wish list of items will be placed above the donation bin and can be downloaded - HERE
  •     October 20-23, 2014: The Clothesline Project and activities will take place all day during the week of Monday through Thursday, in Parks Student Union.
  •     Monday, October 20, 2014: A recording will play in Parks Student Union all day to demonstrate statistics about domestic violence and sexual assault.
  •     Tuesday, October 21, 2014: A moment of silence will take place in Parks Student Union at 1:30 pm to honor those who lost their lives because of domestic violence.
  •     Wednesday, October 22, 2014: A domestic violence speaker will come to the Senate Room in Jackson Center between the times of 12:30pm and 2:30pm.
  •     Thursday, October 23, 2014: A pledge to end domestic violence and sexual assault and balloon releasing activity will take place in the grassy area in front of the Jackson Center at 1:30pm.

Support your community by participating in the Clothesline Project, which began in 1990 in Hyannis, MA. You will have the opportunity to donate vital items to those affect by domestic violence and sexual assault through The Clothesline Project Drive. You will also have the opportunity to honor those who have been affected by viewing the t-shirt display and sharing your words of support. Let’s work together to bring awareness to sexual assault and domestic violence. With your help, we can make a better tomorrow.
