Cinco de Mayo Awareness Celebration May 5
10:00am
to
5:00pm

10am-11am Aztec Dance/Aztec Roots Workshop
11:00am-1pm Mariachi Guadalajara de Seattle
1:20pm-1:50pm Baile Folkore Colibri
2:30pm-5pm La Batalla, Cinco de Mayo movie GWH 166

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated annually in honor of “La Batalla de Puebla” in which Mexican troops fought off the French from invading the Mexican territory. Cinco de Mayo is recognized as an American holiday to learn and honor their past. Yet this holiday is stereotyped as the day where Mexican restaurants get packed due to a whole day of cheap margaritas and free chips with salsa however this day signifies much more.
Everett Community College Student L.I.F.E., M.E.Ch.A, and Spanish Club welcome everyone to a day of fun while educating the community of the Mexican Culture. At 10am the day will commence with an opening ritual performed by an Aztec dance group from the Skagit Valley and Western Washington University community members. The dancers wear traditional garments; feather head-dresses and seed-leggings called “chachayotls” that make noise when the dancers move. The drum and sea shell alert you that something special is about to happen. The dances are all very expressive and represent the forces of nature, the universal four corners of the earth, human existence and the struggle for power among the elements. This opening will then transition to a workshop ending at 11:00am.  This workshop is led by the same Aztec Dance Group and will talk about the Mexican Community roots and the historical misconceptions that have been made about the Mexican natives. Being able to connect with the past is the best way to push people forward and celebrate the heritage that is being honored.
At 11:00 am, there will be live music by Mariachi Guadalajara de Seattle in the Jackson Conference Center. There will also be authentic Mexican snacks, drinks, and fun games/activities provided by M.E.Ch.A and Spanish club.
At 1:20pm we will have a beautiful performance done by Baile Folklore Colibri. These dances are not just for show, but also to honor traditional Mexican dances from different parts of Mexico. Baile Folklore Colibri does a wonderful job in highlighting the significance of traditional dances from Mexico and they are proud to share their culture with their audience.
To wrap up the day we will have a showing of La Batalla, Cinco de Mayo movie. A significant battle in Mexican history will be played in this historical war drama defining the Battle of Puebla. Mexico goes into battle with the French army, outnumbered and outgunned they boldly defeat the French. Come join us in watching this film that accentuates the events of Cinco de Mayo. After the film we will have a debriefing where students can engage in a conversation on their thoughts and opinion on the film.
