College in the High School
What is the "College in the High School" (CHS) Program?
This program is a cooperative program between local school districts and Everett Community College (EvCC). It allows high school students to simultaneously earn high school and college credit for work done in one or more pre-approved advanced high school courses. The courses are taught by qualifing high school teachers who work closely with EvCC faculty mentors to insure that the work that the students perform in the high school course is equivalent to a similar course taught on campus.
How Does the Student Benefit from the Program?
Students can accelerate their academic studies by earning college credit while still in high school. The courses included in the program are those most often required in the freshman coursework of Washington’s community colleges and universities. Each advanced high school course in the program has been deemed equivalent to the work performed in a similar EvCC course. Upon successful completion the course is transcripted with the college’s course title and number, just as it appears in the college catalog.
The cost for a 5-credit College In The High School course is $180.00, textbooks included. The cost for an equivalent course taken at EvCC can be as much as $330 not including textbooks. A significant savings to the student!
The College in the High School program is coordinated through EvCC's Continuing Education Department. If you have additional questions or concerns, contact Karen Landry at our Continuing Education Office. Karen's telephone number is 425-267-0153 or email klandry@everettcc.edu.
How Difficult are the Courses?
Advanced high school courses approved for this program are challenging and similar in content and rigor to the equivalent college courses offered on campus. They are more intensive and often require more time and work outside of the classroom than high school students are used to. The grade awarded for the college credit (and posted to the college transcript) will be determined using EvCC’s grading scale. (Grades awarded for high school credit may be different than those awarded in the CHS program.)
