Hi-Q - High School Quiz Competition

Hi-Q is the oldest, continuous academic quiz competition for high school students in the nation. It was the first of its kind, initiated in 1948 in Pennsylvania and 1976 in Washington. Today, the Everett Region Hi-Q program is the only one of its kind on the West Coast. Questions are based primarily on the content of 14 standard high school courses: American History, American Government, Art History, Biology, Chemistry, Current Events, Geography, Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Shakespeare and World History. Each subject comprising a separate question category. Guidelines or specific reference material are provided for all categories.

The Hi-Q program emphasizes educational excellence, creates enthusiasm for knowledge, and encourages learning through a program that is exciting and educational. Hi-Q is unique, particularly in today's climate of eliminating nonessential programs from school curricula. It involves not just the teams, but also engages the entire student body. Superintendents and principals make time in their schools' schedules so that students are able to attend the program in an assembly during the school day.

Everett Community College is the primary sponsor for the program in the Everett Region. The program also receives support from local community groups, businesses, and foundations. Additionally, participating schools contribute toward the program's funding. The Hi-Q Regional Coordinator from Everett Community College manages the program to meet objectives and ensure a positive experience for the students.

Currently the Hi-Q program is conducted in five areas across the country: Everett, Washington; Chester, Pennsylvania; Marinette, Wisconsin; Mobile, Alabama; and Winslow, Maine. Schools that have participated in the Everett Region for are as follows with new school denoted with an asterisk.
