TLC: What's New?

Inspiration, Updates, Workshops and More...

Come teach in The Studio - applications being accepted through Friday, April 30.

What is The Studio?studio applicationThe Studio is an experimental classroom and laboratory intended to promote scholarly reflection, which leads to the improvement of learning and teaching. It is a place where faculty can try new instructional methods and share their experiences with other faculty in a collaborative and supportive setting. The Studio provides a space for creative learning and teaching, and resources to support participants as they actively investigate the effectiveness of their course and widen their repertoire of teaching and learning strategies.

What will I have to do?
1.  Actively participate in regular meetings with the Studio Teaching Lab (for example, two hours, every two weeks)
2.  Provide a plan for gaining feedback from students
3.  Be willing to be inquisitive, innovative and flexible in my teaching

I need more information or need to chat about my ideas.
Great!  Contact either Paul Marshall or Sara Frizelle for more information or to chat about ideas.
Or better yet, join us for an open house!  Date and time to be determined.

So , So , So , So ,

All applications are due to Paul Marshall or Sara Frizelle, no later than Friday, April 30 @ 5pm.

The 2010 Winter College Retreat Art Project.

Each year, for the past three years, participants in the annual college retreat have created works of art. Great Books on Teaching
Two new and interesting books on various aspects of teaching and learning have recently crossed my desk. (Available in the EvCC Library)

"How People Learn: Brain, Mind, Experience, and School. External Site LinkJohn D. Bransford, Ann L. Brown, and Rodney R. Cocking, editors. National Academy Press. This book was the center piece of last years Instructional Technology Teaching Lab. Your colleagues loved the book and found the research compelling and informative.

Teach Like A Champion: 49 echniques that put students on the path to college, Doug Lemov"Great art relies on the mastery and application of foundational skills, learned through diligent study.  You learn to strike a chisel with a mallet. You refine the skill with time, learing at what angle to strike and how hard to drive the chisel.......this book is about the tools of the teaching craft."

Barriers and Promises in STEM Reform, Melissa H. Dancy, Johnson C. Smith University  Charles Henderson, Western Michigan University
Not a book, but a exceptionally interesting research report was recently sent ot our TLC from the Center for Instructional Design and Research and the University of Washington.  The survey of STEM Research (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) offers useful ideas about how to apply best practices in teaching research to our everyday curriculum.
