Basic Skills Leads to Better Jobs for EvCC Students
As part of Everett Community College's celebration of Washington's Adult Literacy Week Oct. 16-22, 2011, EvCC Today spoke with students Amel Day and Valentyna Marushkevych about the value of their education.
Amel and Valentyna started their education in EvCC's English as a Second Language program and completed the six-month Nursing Assistant Certified I-BEST program at Everett Community College. They passed the state exam and become certified nursing assistants.
"It can change your life in America," Valentyna said about adult education programs like I-BEST (Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training) program, which pairs literacy education with technical training.
"You can get a better job, a better salary. You can better support your family, and you can be independent from support services," she said.

Valentyna is a wife and mother of three, who came to America with her family a year and a half ago.
Both women are continuing their health care education at EvCC, Amel in phlebotomy and Valentyna in medical assisting, while working at Regency Care Center Monroe, a skilled nursing and long-term-care community.
