EvCC Renames Gallery to Honor
Former Art Instructor Russell Day

EVERETT, WA – Everett Community College is renaming its Northlight Gallery in honor of artist Russell Day, EvCC’s first art instructor and founder of the campus gallery.
The gallery was renamed Feb. 8 at a reception for Day, 95, and a group of his former art students. The announcement was a surprise to Day.
“The joy of teaching is what the students bring,” Day said. “It’s so wonderful the great things they could do – more than I was capable of. They were great people … and they still are.”
The Russell Day Gallery is now hosting a special art and design showcase “Russell Day: Catalyst” through March 21 to honor Day’s legacy. The show includes work by Day and 20 of his former students. The show includes a wide range of artworks, such as jewelry, architecture, paintings, drawings and several pieces artists are creating especially for the show.
An award-winning piece of jewelry created by Day will be included in the show and then put on permanent display in the gallery. A scholarship for Everett Community College art students has also been established in Day’s name. To support the scholarship, contact the EvCC Foundation at 425-388-9948.
Day, who taught at Everett Junior College and Everett Community College from 1948 to 1974, “inspired generations of students to become artists,” said EvCC art instructor Sandra Lepper, Director of the Russell Day Gallery.
Day, who created the first EJC art gallery in the 1950s, inspired many well-known artists including internationally known artist and photographer Chuck Close.
The show was inspired by EvCC photography instructor Lloyd Weller, who joined Lepper in visiting Day and his wife Marjorie, a retired Everett Community College English instructor, in June 2007.
EvCC’s Russell Day Gallery is located inside the Parks Student Union Building. Gallery hours are 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays. Special gallery hours will be added for this show: Saturdays 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Everett Community College is located at 2000 Tower St. in north Everett, two blocks west of North Broadway between 10th and Tower Streets.
