Everett Community College Honors Distinguished Alumni Dr. William and Doris Hummel
EVERETT, WA – Everett Community College’s Alumni Association has selected Dr. William Hummel and Doris Hummel as the college’s 2010 Distinguished Alumni.
The couple will be honored at a celebration June 11 and recognized at EvCC’s graduation on the same day.
“Dr. William Hummel and Doris Hummel have been an important part of our community for more than four decades. They exemplify the kind of leadership we hope will inspire our students and graduates,” Everett Community College president David Beyer said.
The Hummels, of Everett, attended Everett Junior College in 1942 and 1943. The two met at the college, married and continued their studies at the University of Washington and University of Chicago.
Dr. William Hummel, who served in the Navy in World War II and the Korean War, was an orthopedic surgeon in Everett for 42 years until his retirement in 1998. The couple has four children and three grandchildren.
Both said they enjoyed Everett Junior College’s close-knit student groups and supportive faculty.
“We just had a lot of fun when we went there,” recalled Doris Hummel, who was the first in her family to attend college. “You knew everyone, and the professors always had time to help.”
The Hummels support current Everett Community College students through a nursing scholarship awarded annually by the EvCC Foundation.
“We wanted to help people locally,” Dr. William Hummel explained. “Nurses are an important part of the medical field.”
This is the fourth year the Alumni Association has named distinguished alumni. The award is the highest honor given to Everett Community College and Everett Junior College alumni.
