EvCC Nurses

EVERETT, WA – Everett Community College nursing students are seeking donations of vitamins and medical supplies by Aug. 20 for their trip to care for impoverished families in the Dominican Republic in September.

The group of 21 students and five instructors will volunteer Sept. 5-11 in some of the poorest neighborhoods in the Dominican Republic’s capital, Santo Domingo.

They will provide medical care and healthcare education in makeshift clinics in neighborhoods where many cannot afford medications, vitamins or basic medical supplies like bandages. Infections from minor wounds are common, and volunteers are anticipating a lot of wound care.

“It will be an eye-opening experience, and I think we’ll be able to help some people who really need it,” EvCC nursing student Elizabeth Gannon said.

The trip is sponsored by the Foundation for Peace. Learn more at www.foundationforpeace.org External Site Link. Students and instructors each paid $1,500 for the trip.

In addition to providing basic medical care, the group also plans to distribute hygiene kits and teach children how to brush their teeth and wash their hands.

Each EvCC group member will bring a suitcase full of medical supplies and hygiene kits. The group is asking for donations of supplies by Aug. 20, especially over-the-counter medications, vitamins and prenatal vitamins. Items can be dropped off at Everett Community College, Index room 140. Needed items include:

  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol or other brand), including chewable and infant drops
  • Aspirin
  • Ibuprofen (Advil or other brand)
  • Pepto-Bismol tablets and Tums tablets (or other brands)
  • Multivitamins with iron for adults and chewable multivitamins for children (no gummy vitamins)
  • Prenatal vitamins
  • Hydrocortisone cream or ointment (1%)
  • Hydrogen peroxide (8-ounce bottles)
  • Isopropyl rubbing alcohol (8-ounce or 16-ounce bottles)
  • Pen lights (to look in throats)

Monetary donations are also being accepted to purchase supplies and are tax-deductible. For more information about donating, contact Candace Whedon at 425-512-7387 or cwhedon@everettcc.edu
