EvCC Nurses to Volunteer in Dominican Republic

EVERETT, WA – Everett Community College nursing students are raising money and collecting donations of supplies for a December trip to the Dominican Republic to provide care for impoverished families.

Students are seeking donations of over-the-counter medications and hygiene supplies and money to purchase prescription medications such as antibiotics.

The group of 25 students and four instructors will volunteer Dec. 11-17 in the Dominican Republic’s capital, Santo Domingo.

They will work alongside local doctors to provide medical care and healthcare education in makeshift clinics in areas where many cannot afford medications, vitamins or basic hygiene supplies like toothpaste and shampoo. Infection and malnourishment from unclean drinking water are common, and volunteers are expecting to treat many parasitic infections.

“We’ll be working in some of the poorest neighborhoods where many families don’t have access to basic healthcare or clean drinking water,” EvCC nursing instructor Candace Whedon said. “The care we provide can be life-changing for the families, and it also provides a global perspective of healthcare for students that just can’t be taught in the classroom.”

This is the third year EvCC nursing students have volunteered in the Dominican Republic through the Foundation for Peace. Students and instructors each pay $1,500 for the trip. Learn more at www.foundationforpeace.org.

Each EvCC group member will bring a suitcase of medical supplies and hygiene kits. The group is asking for donations by Nov. 10.

To make a tax-deductible, financial donation, contact Whedon at cwhedon@everettcc.edu or 425-388-9462.
