EVERETT, Wash – Everett Community College Youth Re-Engagement student Samantha Scace has been recognized with the “We Value Kids” award from the Snohomish County Children’s Commission.
Scace, who lives in Sultan, enrolled in the Youth-Re-Engagement program in 2010 as a single mother of a 2-month-old daughter. She is earning her high school diploma and her associate’s degree and plans to graduate in spring 2013. She’ll then continue working toward her goal of becoming a teacher.
“Samantha has been an example to others in her commitment to providing a better life for herself and her daughter,” according to her award certificate. “She could have chosen an easier path, but instead chose to provide a quality of life for herself and her daughter that could only happen by taking advantage of opportunities to further her education.”
Scace, who has earned 79 credits at EvCC while working two part-time jobs, also gives back to the Youth Re-Engagement program. She visits classes of first-quarter Youth Re-Engagement students and talks to them about what it takes to make the transition from high school drop-out to thriving college student.
“She acts as a mentor and an inspiration to those just starting on the path she’s so successfully travelled,” said EvCC Youth Re-Engagement Case Manager Rebecca Hungerford, who nominated Scace for the award.
Outside of school, Scace works with children as a part-time gymnastics instructor. She has worked in the past, both as a paid employee and as a volunteer, for Take the Next Step, a non-profit community resource center in Monroe. She also volunteered her time tutoring other high schools students in math.
Scace loves studying languages and looks forward to a career as a teacher, working with high school or college students.
