Pape-Lindstrom Named Leadership Fellow
EVERETT, WA – Everett Community College biology instructor Pamela Pape-Lindstrom was one of 40 college biology faculty members across the nation selected as a Vision and Change Leadership Fellow by the Partnership for Undergraduate Life Sciences Education.
The fellows will work over the next year to identify ways to improve undergraduate life sciences education.
The other faculty named leadership fellows in Washington state are: Gita Bangera of Bellevue College, William Davis of Washington State University, Joann Otto of Western Washington University and Jenny McFarland of Edmonds Community College.
Pape-Lindstrom has taught at EvCC since 2000 and is the chair of the college’s Life Sciences Department.
“I am excited to participate as a PULSE fellow because I wish to continue my work to reform science teaching,” she said. “Students become passionate about learning when they are actively engaged with relevant content. I am energized by the progress that we have made in our biology curriculum at EvCC, especially the strategic systems-thinking encouraged by computer modeling. Strategic thinking will be imperative for our society in the future. I want to promote these and other active learning approaches as the norm at institutions nationwide.”
Pape-Lindstrom earned her bachelor’s of science in biology from the University of Miami and a doctorate in biology from University of South Carolina.
She has participated in several biology education initiatives in the past and is currently working with researchers on a National Science Foundation-funded project examining whether specific course interventions can lower the achievement gap exhibited between students from disadvantaged versus advantaged backgrounds.
The PULSE program is a joint initiative of the National Science Foundation, Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the National Institutes of Health.
These post-secondary life sciences faculty members were competitively selected by an expert panel for their experience in catalyzing reform in undergraduate biology education.
After evaluating more than 250 applications, the PULSE steering committee selected the fellows. Individuals come from 24 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and represent research universities, liberal arts colleges, comprehensive/regional universities and two-year colleges.
