See Contemporary Drawings & Paintings Sept. 23-Oct. 25 at EvCC’s Russell Day Gallery
EVERETT, Wash. – See work by two artists seeking to redefine contemporary art in the “Incommensurable Things” exhibit Sept. 23 to Oct. 25 at Everett Community College’s Russell Day Gallery.
The exhibit features drawings and paintings by Emily Gherard and Stephanie Pierce.
“These artists see things in a way that is impossible to measure or compare,” Gallery Director Greg Kammer said. “There is no scale, no common quality on which to make comparisons. That’s what ‘incommensurable’ means.”
Gherard and Pierce will speak about the exhibit at a reception noon-2 p.m. Sept. 26 at the gallery.
Gherard, who teaches art at EvCC, North Seattle Community College and Bellevue College, alternates between painting and picking at the surface of her work to present inanimate objects in a unique style. She is represented by Francine Seders Gallery in Seattle, and her work has been included in numerous shows in the Puget Sound region and elsewhere. She is a finalist for the 2013 Neddy at Cornish Exhibition in Painting at Cornish College of the Arts. Learn more at www.gherard.com.
Pierce’s work also begins with common objects, which are transformed by her detailed, abstract painting style. Her work is represented by Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects in New York and Alpha Gallery in Boston, has been exhibited nationally and has been published in The New Yorker. She teaches at the University of Arkansas and in 2012 was awarded an Arkansas Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship. Learn more at www.stephanie-pierce.com.
EvCC’s Russell Day Gallery is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and is closed Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The gallery is located in Parks Student Union room 219 at Everett Community College, 2000 Tower St.
