Celebrate Food Day Oct. 22-24 in Everett
EVERETT, Wash. – Join the nationwide celebration of healthy, sustainable, affordable food Oct. 22-24 at Food Day events at Everett Community College and Everett Public Library.
The free events are open to the public and include a film screening, an author talk, cooking demonstrations, and a sustainable food fair.
“We want to show our community that good food doesn’t need to cost a lot or require a lot of time to prepare,” said EvCC nutrition instructor Laura Wild, one of the organizers. “We encourage cooking local, sustainable food – grown and processed in ways that limit environmental impacts – which positively impacts our health and the health of our planet.”
- Watch and discuss “Fresh,” a documentary about the fresh food movement in America, at 12:20 p.m. Oct. 22 at Everett Community College’s Gray Wolf Hall, room 276, led by EvCC nutrition and anthropology instructors, Nancy Vandenburg and Cynthia Clarke.
- Chef Kathleen Flinn, author of “The Kitchen Counter Cooking School” and cookfearless.com, will talk at 7 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Everett Public Library auditorium, 2702 Hoyt Ave.
Flinn, who received her culinary training at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, wants Americans to eat fewer synthetic food products and be fearless in the kitchen. She will teach basic knife skills and a segment on tasting kitchen staples like salt and canned tomatoes. She’ll also sign copies of her book.
- The sustainable food fair will take place 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 24 at EvCC’s Henry M. Jackson Conference Center. The fair features cooking demonstrations, samples, educational displays, and sustainable vendors. The food samples will be prepared by EvCC students and staff with local ingredients, including produce from the campus garden.
This is the third annual Food Day celebration in Everett and the first year EvCC and Everett Public Library are partnering to offer events in two locations.
Everett’s Food Day events are sponsored by Everett Public Library, EvCC’s Sustainability Initiative, the EvCC Foundation and EvCC Student Activities.
