EvCC’s Andrea Cahan Earns Math Teaching Award

EVERETT, Wash. – Everett Community College math instructor Andrea Cahan is the winner of the 2014 Washington state 2-year college mathematics teaching award.

Cahan, of Snohomish, was selected for the award by her peers statewide. She was honored for excellence and innovation in teaching with influence beyond her institution.

She received the award May 9 at the annual Washington state Two Year College Mathematics Conference in Wenatchee. The conference was co-sponsored by Everett and Shoreline community colleges.

Cahan taught at Snohomish High School for seven years before coming to EvCC in 2004.

“I chose to teach math so I could help people realize they can be successful in mathematics, even if they have struggled in the past and don't feel that they are a ‘math person,’” she said.

For Spring quarter, Cahan developed and taught a combination course at EvCC integrating Math 98 and Math 107 into a 10 credit, one quarter class. She created the class in conjunction with the alternative textbook committee and made the course completely open resource, so the students didn't need to purchase a textbook and saved at least $400 each.
