Our Medical Transcription and Editing Program is an online, 43-credit certificate program utilizing state-of-the art software and text materials for the at-home training of medical transcriptionists and medical transcription editors (MT/MTEs). It is available to students anywhere with internet access, and quarterly course loads may be customized to fit individual scheduling needs. This AHDI-approved program may be entered at the start of any quarter and provides the training to obtain an entry-level position as a medical transcriptionist or editor.
Students utilize their own PC computer; the program is not compatible with a Mac. They should anticipate spending approximately 3 hours per credit hour earned each week in a standard 10-week quater (more in the shorter Summer quarter) to complete the program. Students graduate with a medical transcription and editing certificate.
Only Medical Transcription and Editing students should enroll in MTE classes.
Graduates work as medical transcriptionists and/or medical transcription editors for medical transcription services, hospitals, and clinics. Many work from home as employees or independent or sub-contractors with the opportunity to be their own boss. Work involves listening to dictation by physicians and other healthcare professionals and transcribing or editing it into medical reports, correspondence and other administrative material for patients' medical records.
The Everett Community College comprehensive Medical Transcription and Editing Program is approved by the Approval Committee for Certificate Programs (ACCP), which is governed by the Association of Healthcare Documentation Integrity (ADHI). The ADHI National Leadership Board of Directors acknowledges the ACCP approval committee as the method to identify quality medical transcription education programs that have been evaluated by a peer review process against a minimum set of standards for entry-level medical transcription professionals. This process allows academic institutions, healthcare organizations, and private companies to be acknowledged as offering an AHDI Approved Medical Transcription Certificate Program.
Several factors make AHDI approval valuable including:
- Identifies for the public specialized programs that meet established medical transcription educational standards.
- Stimulates improvement of educational standards by involving faculty and staff in program evaluation and planning and faculty development opportunities.
- Promotes a better understanding of the goals of professional medical transcription education.
- Provides reasonable assurance that practitioners possess the necessary job skills upon entry into the profession.
EvCC’s program approval is good through December 16, 2016, at which time an application for another three-year renewal will be made.
