Cancelled: 2017 Educating the Whole Child Conference

We are sorry to inform you that the 4th Annual Educating the Whole Child Conference, which was scheduled for Monday, August 21, 2017 has been cancelled due to low registration numbers. Please know that Everett Community College is still very committed to the mission and vision of this conference; we will be spending the remainder of our summer (and all of next year) preparing for the return of this conference in August 2018.  More specifically, we look forward to creating a communication plan which will help to ensure we are able to reach as many people as possible to participate in this wonderful opportunity.

This one-day conference focuses on helping educators understand the needs of historically underserved students and provides culturally relevant educational techniques. Workshop topics include Motivational Framework for Culturally Responsive Teaching, Integrating Culture into the Classroom, and Teaching with Poverty in Mind, as well as many other topics.

This conference provides K-20 educators with educational tools and knowledge relevant to the unique needs of the students they will teach in the upcoming school year. We hope the conference positively impacts teacher retention in the critical K-12 years, and improves student success throughout their educational journey.

Background: This conference was created in 2014 by Michael Hansen, an Everett Community College student whose wife is a teacher on the Tulalip reservation. He saw the negative impact of high teacher turnover at Quil Ceda / Tulalip Elementary School and other schools serving historically underserved populations. He was inspired to create a program to better prepare K-12 teachers to truly educate the whole child--for success in the upcoming school year and beyond.
