Everett Arbor

Artist: Anna Valentina Murch

Artist Statement: "The Library/Student Union Building was the center and heart of the Everett Community College. When it was destroyed by arson the heart of the Campus disappeared. The new building quickly replaced the old building’s practical and intellectual functions, but the garden courtyard was not replaced. The glass walled corridor that looked out into this atrium was a gathering place for both students and staff. It created a sanctuary where, in their very busy day, people could have lunch, relax and experience the garden."

Location: Baker Hall (south side)

Related Information: The artwork was commissioned through the Art in Public Places percent-for-arts The work was funded by $26,000 from the Washington State Arts Commission Art in Public Places Program and with donations from the Everett Community College Foundation, Northlight Gallery Art Replacement Fund, and EvCC Student Activities.

In 1998, the Washington State Arts Commission selected Murch to create an arbor design to revive the essence of the atrium that was at the center of the Trojan Union Building before the fire destroyed the building. Murch wanted to enhance the experience of the walk between classes in the center of the campus.
