Students to vote on new fee to fund gym facility

EvCC students will vote whether to have a fee added to tuition costs for a new Fitness and Athletic Center on May 29-31, at the Parks ABC Conference Rooms.

The new fitness and athletic center is among 12 major projects aimed towards improving the student’s quality of life on campus.

According to a March 7 EvCC press release, students won’t be charged the fee until the fitness and athletic center opens in 2010. However, improvements will start as early as September 2007.

During their Feb. 23 meeting the EvCC Student Senate unanimously agreed to allow a student vote to determine if and where the fees would go.

The fees will cost $5 per credit, up to a maximum of 10 credits per quarter.

EvCC building plans, new gym in the works

The students of EvCC will decide the fate of the proposed gym and athletic facility replacement project when the polls open May 29-31 for a decision on the Student Campus Enhancement Fund.

Replacement of the athletic facility will only be possible if students vote ‘yes’ on the Student Campus Enhancement Fund, according to EvCC vice president of administration, Michael Kerns.

The new Student Health and Fitness Center is estimated to open for student use in 2010, but the date to decide whether construction for EvCC’s new gym will even break ground is only a few months away.
