Travel and Study in Costa Rica 2013

After flying into San Jose, we soon meet our host families for our first week’s stay in San Joaquín, suburb of Heredia. San Joaquín offers a typical “Tico” or local Costa Rican life style surrounded by countryside of coffee and sugar plantations, while only 30 minutes away from Costa Rica's capital. Each morning we attend semi-private Spanish language classes held at the prestigious Centro Panamericano de Idiomas (CPI), Heredia campus External Site Link complimented with Art/English studies and daily tours or cultural activities. We will cook a typical Latin lunch, visit museums in San Jose, tour botanical gardens and a traditional ox cart workshop in Sarchi, sketch nature and wildlife on site at the Poas Volcano and the La Paz Waterfall gardens and take a Latin dance class.

Image3We walk guided nature hikes through local trails and national reserves, visit local coffee plantations, sustainable farms and arts and craft cooperatives, soar over the rainforest canopy on ziplines and encounter tropical wonders of plant and wildlife; hummingbirds, orchids, monkeys, quetzals, wild cats, 5% of the world’s biological diversity. Our observations expand in Art/English travel journals, recording the peaceful beauty of the rainforest in sketch and prose.

We descend from the mountains by private van to the southern coast, via a river tour on Rio Tarcoles, crucial habitat for the American crocodile. Our travels conclude with a weekend at Manuel Antonio, with a guided nature hike in the National Park and time to relax on the beach or at the hotel pool before returning to San Jose and flights home.
