Sculpture courses concentrate on the basic principles and elements of design as they pertain to three-dimensional art. Assignments focus on the use of line, planes, surface, materiality, shape, volume, and structure with an emphasis on craft and presentation. Hand and power tools are used to model, cast, assemble, and carve materials such as metal, wood, clay, fibers, and other non-traditional materials. Active learning is supplemented with information on sculptural style, history and vocabulary. Advanced courses include an introduction to woodworking and metal fabrication while stressing the importance of proper safety protocols associated with tools and general shop use.
