The Nippon Business Institute provides opportunities for volunteers interested in promoting our educational and cultural mission of bridging the gap between eastern and western cultures. Volunteers assist with conducting events in support of the NBI's educational and cultural mission. They also help with garden maintenance and library organization. We also rely on our volunteers to serve as host families for students from Japan during exchange programs.
Host Family Opportunities
Hosting a guest from Japan is a wonderful way to foster cross-cultural relationships and to help promote global understanding and peace between people of different backgrounds. The NBI program provides opportunities for local families to serve as host families for students and others participating in our short-term exchange programs.
These programs include exchange programs for students from EvCC's sister college in Nagoya, Japan - Aichi Toho University and annual summer program exchanges for students from City of Everett's sister city - Iwakuni, Japan. We also conduct short-term exchange programs for Japanese tea and cultural specialists involved in our Japanese Culture & Traditional Arts Exchange Program.
Host families provide room and board, include their guests in family activities, and often supply transportation to and from the college each week day for classes and/or activities. Evenings, weekends and holidays are typically spent with the host family to enjoy their company and learn about American culture and lifestyles. In return, host families receive the benefit of a unique international cultural experience and the opportunity to foster new friendships. Some programs also provide a small stipend to help defray some of the expense associated with hosting.
