About Our Program
Train from Home
Our online Medical Coding Program is a 100% distance education program that allows you to train from home. After successfully completing the nine-month program, you will earn a Medical Coding Certificate, and you may voluntarily take a certificate exam given by the American Health and Information Management Association (AHIMA) or AAPC (American Academy of Professional Coders). Passing the exam would earn recognition as a Certified Coding Associate (CCA) or as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC).
Everett Community College is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. This program is approved by the US Department of Education for Federal Student Aid, including Pell Grant and Stafford Loan. Our Financial Aid Program Coordinators will help you through each step of the financial aid application process.

Note: Each class listed with a prerequisite (PR) must have the prerequisite class with a grade of C or higher. Students are encouraged to take classes in the order shown below:

Our Faculty
The medical coding courses at Everett Community College are taught by experienced certified medical coders.
- Kathy Kneifel, CCA, is the lead faculty and advisor for the Medical Coding Program. She has been teaching more than 20 years, the majority of time at the community college level. Kathy is a Certified Coding Associate through AHIMA.
- Julie Graver, CCS-P, is a team lead at Regence Blue Shield in Everett, Washington. She has 15 years in the medical field.
- Michelle Cranney, MBA, RHIA, CCS-P, CPC, DHSc, has ten years of medical office experience and has been teaching medical classes since 1999.
- Diane Sandvick, CCS-P, CPC, has 18 years in the medical field, as instructor, consultant, presenter at numerous coding workshops for WSHIMA and AAPC, and now is the President - elect Everett Chapter AAPC 2011
Prior to beginning medical coding courses, you should have good keyboarding and computer skills. While typing speed is not critical, the ability to type accurately is. You should also be able to save, store, and find data files; research information; and troubleshoot computer problems. Coders need to be precise and accurate; you should be good at proofreading and checking your work. If you do not currently possess those skills, you should consider completing the following courses (either at Everett Community College or another local training facility) before beginning the Medical Coding Program (note: if you are not a resident of Washington State, out-of-state tuition would apply):
- BT 100 Beginning Keyboarding
- CL 101 Computer Literacy
Computer Requirements
You are responsible for providing a computer, software, and Internet connection for your studies. Please see computer requirements on the page "Is Online Study for Me?"
Cost and Materials
The cost of the Medical Coding Program is $4,983.00. Washington State residents and non-residents pay the exact same fees. Fees are subject to change.

Registration & Payment
The Medical Coding program is a self-support, non-tuition program. Classes start and end dates follow the regular EvCC academic calendar. Last date to register and pay (self pay, third party funding, or proof of financial aid award) is due by the Registration & Payment Due Date listed below or by going to the Registration Calendar.
Payment can be made to the Cashier's Office in person in the Parks Student Union during business hours, or through the Student Kiosk. Payment can also be mailed to Everett Community College, Cashier's Office, 2000 Tower St., Everett, WA 98201-1390. Acceptable forms of payment include:
Cash, check money order, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, Financial Aid awarded by EvCC, Veterans Educational Benefits (advance Pay arranged with VA representative) and/or a Third-Party agency.
Withdrawal & Refunds
Deadline to withdraw and receive a 100% refund, or to make changes to your schedule is no later than 4:30pm Pacific Time while the college is on 4/10's (college open four days a week, 10 hours a day) the fourth day of the quarter (100% refund is the quarterly fee). There is no 50% refund option.
The student is responsible for officially withdrawing from the program. No calls please, must be in writing. If you are unable to withdraw in person, please fax your request form to 425-388-9173.
Registration & Payment Deadlines
Tuition is due on or before the 5th business day following your registration, but if you are working with Financial Aid, Third Party, or have a Voucher, the deadline does not apply to you. Please contact Financial Aid or Enrollment Services for your registration date.
