Our online Medical Transcription Program and Editing certificate program is a 100% distance education program utilizing state-of-the art software and text materials used exclusively for the training of medical transcriptionists and medical transciption editors (MT/MTEs) that allows you to train from home. The program of study is 43 credits and may be taken on a part-time or full-time basis customized to fit your scheduling needs. The program is offered in a completely online environment and may be entered at the beginning of any quarter. It is available to students anywhere with internet access. Classes are totally self-contained and focus on providing the training required for a student to obtain an entry-level position as a medical transcriptionist or editor.
Students utilize their own computer and can anticipate spending anywhere from 15 to 40-50 hours per week depending on course load to complete the program. Students graduate with a medical transcription and editing certificate.
Graduates work as medical transcriptionists and medical transcription editors for medical transcription services, hospitals, and clinics. Many work from home as employees or independent or sub-contractors with the opportunity to be their own boss. Work involves listening to dictation by physicians and other healthcare professionals and transcribing or editing it into medical reports, correspondence and other administrative material for patients' medical records.
The Everett Community College comprehensive Medical Transcription and Editing program is approved by the Approval Committee for Certificate Programs (ACCP), which is governed by the Association of Healthcare Documentation Integrity (ADHI). The ADHI National Leadership Board of Directors acknowledges the ACCP approval committee as the method to identify quality medical transcription education programs that have been evaluated by a peer review process against a minimum set of standards for entry-level medical transcription professionals. This process allows academic institutions, healthcare organizations, and private companies to be acknowledged as offering an AHDI Approved Medical Transcription Certificate Program.
Several factors make AHDI Approval valuable including:
- Identifies for the public specialized programs that meet established medical transcription educational standards.
- Stimulates improvement of educational standards by involving faculty and staff in program evaluation and planning and faculty development opportunities.
- Promotes a better understanding of the goals of professional medical transcription education.
- Provides reasonable assurance that practitioners possess the necessary job skills upon entry into the profession.
EvCC’s program approval is good through December 31, 2013, at which time an application for another three-year renewal will be made.
