Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get into the EMT class?
The Everett Community College EMT Training Application is required, including verification of age (18 or older), high school completion, the six required immunizations and current CPR certification. The application also authorizes EvCC to conduct background checks prior to acceptance into the class, consisting of a Washington State Patrol background check, Office of Inspector General check and General Services Administration check. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Why did I receive my application back?
Unsigned, incomplete and/or incorrect applications are returned without processing. One common mistake is not having the correct CPR training. Be certain you take one of the two classes listed on the EMT application: CPR for the Healthcare Provider or CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

Do I take the state test at the end of the class?
The Snohomish County EMS office schedules and administers the state EMT-Basic exam at the end of the class. Students also have the option of paying a test fee and taking the National Registry exam at the end of each class.

Do I get a job at the end of the training?
Completion of the EMT class, Fire 100 class and/or Fire Science degree makes you more marketable in the fire service, but the Emergency Services program does not help with job placement. However, the EvCC Student Employment Referral Center may be able help you in your job search.

How long is my certification valid?
After completion of the class, you will receive an EMT course completion certificate. The certificate will remain in effect for three years provided you earn 10 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for each year of certification, for a total of 30 CEUs, and that you obtain a job with a Fire Department or private Ambulance company. If you earn the credits but do not become employed as an EMT, your certification will expire and you will have to repeat the class.

Does EvCC offer Continuing Education Units?
Yes, the CEU class is offered once yearly, usually in October. The class consists of two Saturdays from 9am to 4pm.

Can Running Start students take EMT Classes?
No. Participants must have a high school diploma and be at least 18 years of age.

Does Financial Aid cover the cost of this class?
The class is eligible for financial aid. Check with the Financial Aid Office for details and applications.

Can I take other classes while enrolled in this class?
We recommend participants register for this class only during the quarter of attendance. Because of the required hours, the outside work and the homework, most participants will not be successful if they take additional classes.

Can I take classes if I have a record?
A Washington State Patrol background check is done on each applicant. Although the college may still allow you to attend class if you have a record, you may be eliminated from state certification for the same reason. If you have a record, contact the Washington State Department of Health at 1-800-458-5281 for more information.
