What does it mean to be an American? This Learning Community will explore the economic, social, and historical impact of various ethnic groups on our national identity. Students will analyze their own assumptions about race, religion, gender, etc. through critical reading, writing, and discussion of diverse literatures.

Explore the inner workings of the teenage brain, its affect on thinking, learning, and emotions. Follow the dynamic voyage from not quite being a child (tween), through adolescence (teen), to not quite being an adult (twixter). This course will study the major concepts and theories in psychology within an educational framework. The course is designed for anyone interested in a career working with youth or fascinated with the study of human behavior and mental processes.

WRITING ON THE WALL
It's Oktoberfest all fall in this film-filled fusion of German and English Composition. You can choose between ENGL& 101 OR ENGL 211 credit. (ENGL 211 fulfills the same requirement as ENGL 102). The spotlight is on German movies. You’ll view, discuss, and write in English about five classics of German cinema from 1919 to 2004 while you learn German and improve your college writing skills. Experience German cinema and enhance your cultural understanding while listening to subtitled German soundtracks. Improve your verbal skills as your progress in each language affects your proficiency in the other.

WRITING ON THE ROCKS
Flourish in a fun and supporting community of learners who will study the Earth from a variety of perspectives, perform hands-on lab experiments, observe the Earth’s processes on field trips (including a required weekend field trip to Mount St. Helens), and connect those activities through writing and research projects. This program combines the study of the dynamic processes of the earth (plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes, geologic time) with the study of the dynamic process of writing effective essays. Enhance your knowledge of the Earth by exploring it through a variety of essay formats. Hone your writing skills by focusing them on an in-depth study of the Earth. You have the option of earning credit in ENGL& 101 or 102, depending on your readiness.

ORCA: OCEAN REASEARCH COLLEGE ACADEMY
Are you interested in marine biology, environmental studies, or literacy and historical studies about our relationships to the natural world? Do you want to engage in debates and research on such topics as climate change, the Clean Water Act, animal diversity and human culture, and diverse historical perspectives? If so, this full-time, interdisciplinary program is for you! ORCA weaves math, science, English and history classes together in a dynamic mix of problem-based learning, complemented by frequent field trips and quarterly projects such as mock hearings or research symposia. This program requires a year-long commitment in order to complete all coursework. All classes, which are located at the Applied Technology and Training Center must be taken together and are scheduled from 9am to 2:15 pm (plus 2-3 later-afternoon field trips). Students must be college-ready in English and math to begin fall classes: Oceanography 101, Humanities 125, Math 141 [140] Seminar, History 147 [152]. Courses in this unique and nationally-recognized program lead to an Associate in Arts and Sciences – Option II (the university transfer degree). Instructor permission is required.
