Everett Community College has extended its commitment to the global community through the Center for English Language Studies (CELS).The mission of the short-term programs at CELS is to provide opportunities for non-native learners of English to increase their competence in every area of the English language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Our short-term programs are designed for students aged 18 years or older who wish to improve their English for personal, business, professional, or personal needs or who seek admission to an American college.

The goal of our program is for our students to experience total immersion in English language and culture. Our program is small and friendly, and we work to provide you opportunities to meet and interact with many people in our community who are eager to get to know you and help you with your English. CELS is a top notch program that offers:

  • Small class sizes (10-15 students)
  • All room and board in a comfortable homestay
  • Experienced and qualified instructors
  • Project-based learning activities
  • Cultural excursions to area attractions
  • Conversation Club with native speakers

A Typical Day at CELS

There is no typical day at CELS! Our program is creatively designed for complete immersion in the English language. We emphasize increased competence in traditional language skills, but our ultimate goal is for students to practice and use their language skills daily to interact with native speakers outside of the classroom in authentic settings.

ESL students in class 02Core Instruction

Each week students are in class with their instructors for 12-15 hours of Core classes. These are integrated skills classes designed to increase students' competence in grammar, listening/speaking, reading/writing, and pronunciation.

Beyond the Classroom

In addition to Core classes, students will participate in our Conversation Club, where you will meet and discuss relevant, contemporary topics with native speakers eager to learn more about you and your culture.  There are also project-based activities that get students out into the community as well as cultural excursions designed to immerse the students fully in the language and culture of North America. These activities may include:

Cultural Excursions:

Experiential Learning:

Seattle Center and the Space Needle Jetty Island Nature Walk and Campfire
Pike Place Market and the first Starbucks Volunteering at Everett Children's Museum
University District Community Mapping Project
Safeco Field Lectures, social and cultural events oncampus

Housing

Our goal of total immersion extends to the housing offered. Each student will live with a volunteer host family that is looking forward to welcoming you into their home. Our homestay program is an excellent way to improve English and learn hands-on about American culture.  All host families are professionally screened by our homestay provider, Abode.
