Quarterly Checklist for CDS Students
Four to six weeks before the next quarter begins:
_____ Meet with your assigned advisor to discuss what classes you should take next quarter.
Things to keep in mind when scheduling classes:
- Try not to schedule classes back-to-back if you are planning on using Exam Accommodations. You don't want to miss your second class while using extra time on a test in your first class.
- Leave a break between classes if you have difficulty concentrating. This will give you time to regain focus or recopy notes from what you just learned, which will help you retain the information better.
- Leaving a break between classes is also a good idea if you have difficulties getting from class to class. By scheduling yourself time to stop and rest, you will be better prepared for your next class.
- Pay attention to your course load. Will you be overloaded with credits? If so, work with your advisor to arrange a schedule that you will be able to handle.
_____Register for classes. Use Priority Registration if you are eligible. Priority Registration dates can be found in the Class Schedule.
_____Fill out a Request for Services form online or at the CDS office and submit it to CDS with your schedule attached. This form must be filled out every quarter that you plan on receiving accommodations. Forms are due within 5 days of registering for classes - forms received after this point will be processed in the order they are received and your accommodations may not be ready by the beginning of the quarter. See a CDS staff person if you need help filling out the form.
If you are requesting Books In Alternative Format:
_____Get a copy of the course syllabus from the instructor to find out what books you will need and in what order they will be read. This will help ensure that you will have what you need by the time the class starts.
_____Purchase your textbooks and bring your original receipt to CDS (copies are not accepted).
_____Fill out an E-Text Request form so that CDS has all the information needed in order to request your book. You will need the title, author, ISBN number, and other information about the book.
If you are requesting Furniture:
____Visit your classrooms to see what kind of furniture is already available. Some classrooms have tables and chairs that may work for your needs and will not require CDS to place furniture for you.
The first week of classes:
____Come to the CDS office to pick up Faculty Letters for each of your instructors if you are requesting exam accommodations or other accommodations that require your instructor's assistance. Schedule a time to meet with your instructors early in the quarter during their office hours to discuss the letter. Return the faculty letter cover page to the CDS office once signed.
_____If you have requested to pick up notes from a notetaker in class, look for your notetaker during the first week. The CDS office does not notify you when we have found a notetaker. After the second week of the quarter, CDS will not continue searching for a notetaker unless you have contacted the office to confirm that notes are still needed.
Throughout the quarter:
_____ If you are using Exam Accommodations, remember to bring a test bag to your instructor 2-3 days before each test.
_____ If you have requested to receive a Mid-Quarter Assessment, pay attention to your instructor's comments or suggestions and meet with them if necessary to help implement ways you can improve your grade before the end of the quarter.
_____ Contact your instructor or the CDS office the minute you start having trouble! It is much easier to brainstorm solutions early on than to wait until it is too late.
_____ If you are considering Dropping or Auditing a class, please contact the CDS office right away. We can set up a time to discuss how to arrange this and how this choice would impact you or your Financial Aid.
_____ If you add or drop a class, bring a copy of your new schedule to CDS so we can make changes to any accommodations you have requested.
At the end of the quarter:
_____ If you have checked out equipment, such as tape recorders, return all items to the CDS office by the last day of classes. Grades and transcripts may be held until the equipment is returned.
