After basic training in the Army, Larry Hanson decided to attend Everett Junior College. Needing to work his way through college, Larry was able to get a job at The Herald as a messenger, and was promoted to advertising salesman a few months later.
After receiving his Associates Degree from Everett Junior College, Larry transferred to the University of Washington and majored in Business Management, all the while continuing to work full-time and advance in the career that became his passion. He eventually became President and Publisher of The Herald. In 2009, received an Everett Community College Distinguished Alumni award.
Larry met his wife of 49 years, Raili Kuivikko, during a photo shoot for the annual. Raili was in the nursing program at EJC, graduated as Valedictorian of her class, and became a registered nurse at Everett General Hospital retiring after 40 years.
Larry shares his memories of starting his first year at the former college site located on a single block in downtown Everett, and his pride in showcasing the new beautiful and sprawling campus in the 1959 annual when the campus moved to the current site his sophomore year.
Larry Hanson was interviewed by University Center's Kathy Baringer on March 18, 2010. Listen to his entire story.
In 2013, Larry and his brother Richard Hanson were featured in an EvCC alumni ad and in an online story.
