Dear Student,

You are invited to apply to the very popular and much anticipated Undoing Racism and Community Organizing workshop presented by the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond. Through dialogue, reflection, role-playing, strategic planning and presentations, this intensive process challenges participants to analyze the structures of power and privilege that hinder social equity and prepares them to be effective organizers for justice.

Workshop participants will:

  • Develop a common definition of racism and an understanding of its different forms: individual, institutional, liguistic, and cultural;

  • Develop a common language and analysis for examining racism in the United States;

  • Understand one’s own connection to institutional racism and its impact on his/her work;

  • Understand why people are poor and the role of institutions in exacerbating institutional racism, particularly for people and communities of color;

  • Understand the historical context for how racial classifications in the United States came to be and how and why they are maintained;

  • Understand the historical context for how U.S. institutions came to be and who they have been designed to serve;

  • Understand how all of us, including white people, are adversely impacted by racism every day, everywhere;

  • Address surface assumptions about how your work is (or is not) affected by racism;

  • Develop awareness and understanding about ways to begin Undoing Racism;

  • Gain knowledge about how to be more effective in the work you do with your constituencies, your organizations, your communities, your families;

  • Understand the role of community organizing and building effective multiracial coalitions as a means for Undoing Racism.

All Application materials are due no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, January 20, 2017 in person to Student LIFE (PSU 209), the Diversity & Equity Center (PSU 316) or the Center for Disability Services (PSU 268) Or you can scan and email the signed application materials to studentlife@everettcc.edu . If you have questions contact (425) 388-9504.

Submitting your application does not guarantee that you will be selected to attend. A waitlist will be established and used if student is unable to attend. EvCC will pay the workshop registration if you are selected.

Comedy Show ft. Pete Lee! April 11
1:30pm
to

Do you fell like your classes are sucking all the fun out of your day? Do you just need a break to sit and laugh your worries away? Student Programs Board has just what you need!

Pete Lee might be the nicest person in New York City, but that's because it's impossible to sound aggressive with a Wisconsin accent. Pete was raised in Janesville, WI by divorced parents and a 19-inch television, which is probably why he pursued a career in entertainment. Thanks to his highly rated Comedy Central Presents half-hour special, Pete packed venues at over 500 colleges and universities across the country. Pete has a hit YouTube series titles Pete Lee's Internet Freak Show, has been a standout on NBC's Last Comic Standing, and has also played a doctor on the CBS soap opera, As the World Turns. He is a writer and cast member on FUSE TV's Video on Trial and a cast member on VH1's Best Week Ever. Pete is a rising star in the college market and on television, but he is also really fun to have dinner with at your local Applebee's.

Come and join us for an entertaining hour of comedy with Pete Lee on Tuesday, April 11 from 1:20-2:30pm in Jackson Center!

Rainbows, Glitter, Sex & Communication- LGBTQIA+ Sex Ed! April 27
10:00am
to
2:00pm

Come join us for an all-inclusive day of Sex Education, Comedy, and Communication tailored specifically for the LGBTQIA+ community. There is simply a lack of good sex education for LGBTQIA+ folks; this will be a wonderful opportunity to gain knowledge of STIs, contraceptives, statistics, and other information relevant to the community regarding sex and relationships. All events will be held throughout the day in Jackson Center 101.

There are three events scheduled for the day. First, at from 10am-11am, there will be a presentation on LGBTQIA+ sex education by Hez Wollin. Hez Wollin is a trans/genderqueer Licensed Clinical Social Worker who works predominantly as a therapist with LGBTQ+ adults and adolescents. Hez became passionate about queer sex education when they were in college, doing anti-violence work and teaching fellow students about sex positive, enthusiastic consent. Hez works from an anti-oppression/social justice lens in their practice, and believes in an embodied, trauma informed, collaborative approach to healing. In their spare time, Hez enjoys biking, working with clay, reading, exploring the Northwest, and learning about astrology. Find out more about their work at www.hwollintherapy.com.

Next, from 1pm-1:30pm, come join us for a hilarious LGBTQIA+ comedy half-hour with comedian Marita DeLeon. Marita is a fat, queer, filipina femme who works as an esthetician and makeup artist by day, and a stand-up comic, producer, and host by night. She believes in performance and artistry as activism and constantly strives to use her talents as resistance to the fight for racial and social justice. She co-produces and hosts a monthly QTPOC (Queer and Trans People of Color) centered comedy variety show with El Sanchez every second Wednesday of the month at the Rendezvous called Fist & Shout. Follow her journey of make-up, self-care selfies, laughter, and food on Instagram @maritaisabel.

Finally, finish off your day with an informative talk about Sex and Communication with Lyric Seal from 1:30-2:30pm. Their workshop ‘Slumber Party’ will cover things such as sexting, communication, sex positivity, “body-wokeness”, and feelings in LGBTQIA+ relationships. “Slumber Party with Lyric Seal” is based on their advice column of the same name. Lyric Seal is a quad-directional adult/actress for liberation, a revolutionary queer gossip, an intuitive movement educator, a disability justice engaged polemicist, and a sci-fi poet. They lean into and rejoice in their Blackness, Disabledness, Femmeness, Gayness, Hyper-Empathy, and Broadway dreams, and hope you will remember- Gender, and all other boring binaries, are cancelled. The good stuff has begun!

We hope that you will join us for this day of rainbows, glitter, sex positivity, education, and communication. We also ask that you please arrive without perfume, cologne, or other fragrances, as they are harmful to guests and speakers with asthma, allergies, and chemical injuries.

If you need accommodation for this event, please contact the Center for Disability Service at least 5 days in advance at 425-388- 9272 or CDS@everettcc.edu.

Renewable Energy in Cuba Presented by Mario Alberto Arrastía Avila June 5
4:00pm

For the second time in the last 40 years the Republic of Cuba tries to change the balance of the energy carriers used to produce electricity. The country didn´t succeed in the attempt to introduce nuclear energy in its energy mix. With the new energy policies Cuba wants to reduce its dependence on foreign oil and the environmental pollution created by the generation of electricity. At the same time the country is aiming at improving its economic indicators by reducing the cost of electricity to final consumers. This change in the energy mix is a significant breakthrough in the way towards sustainability that the small Caribbean archipelago is been developing for decades.

Professor Mario Alberto Arrastía Avila was born in La Habana, Cuba on October 23rd, 1959. He studied Physics at the Pedagogical University of La Habana where he got a Bachelor in Education Diploma in Physics & Astronomy in 1982. He taught both subjects during 26 years in secondary school, high school and higher education. Professor Mario Alberto Arrastía Avila is member of the Cuban Society for the promotion of Renewable Energies and Environmental Respect since 1998. He has visited about a dozen countries around the world for professional reasons giving scientific talks and technical presentations about energy, sustainability, environment and climate change. In 2006 Professor Mario Alberto totally changed his professional life and started working for the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment as specialist for science, technology and environment. Professor Mario has expertise on energy audits and energy education. He got his Master of Sciences Degree on renewable energies with major in photovoltaic technology in 2016 from the University of Technology in La Habana. He has authored five books and dozens of articles about energy issues. This is his third visit to the US. He is married, father of one son and lives in La Habana, Cuba.

Safe Zone & Pride Center Birthday Celebration

You’re invited to celebrate the birthday of both the Safe Zone and the Pride Center. The Safe Zone program on our campus will be turning 17 years old, and the Pride Center will be turning 2!

The Safe Zone committee at EvCC was founded in December of 2000; it supports LGBTQIA+ members of Everett Community College and its community, and it provides a safe, welcoming environment for them. Displaying the Safe Zone symbol shows support for the community, and communicates that it is safe to talk to the person who displays it. The symbol is also welcoming to LGBTQIA+ members of the community. Countless colleges across the US have Safe Zone committees, and Everett Community College is proud to be one of them.

The Pride Center was created by the Safe Zone and opened October 12 of 2015. It provides a safe space to ask questions, and to feel empowered being yourself. It offers a variety of information and services for LGBTQIA+ students and the community. Our campus is one of the only community colleges in the country to have a Pride Center, and we are very thankful to be able to provide this space to our school.

At the event, there will be many festivities for your enjoyment, including colorful decorations, free rainbow ribbons, and free birthday cupcakes. There will be FREE "Stay Calm and Love Who You Love" t-shirts! For the free cupcake, all we ask for is a friendly conversation with us. There will also be a vegan / gluten free option of cupcake for those who have special dietary requirements. Individuals who attend will have the opportunity to learn about the Safe Zone and the Pride Center, have conversations over cupcakes, and receive some awesome gear to represent and support the community.

Coffee, Cake, & Islam October 26
12:15pm

The Humanities Alliance invites you to meet members of the local Ahmadiyya Muslim community on Thursday, October 26, from 12:20-1:20 in WHI 105, and enjoy some coffee and cake.

Here, in their own words, is your invitation!

"We find a great deal of commentary and analysis on Islam and Muslims in the media but it is a rarity for someone to connect with local Muslims and have a candid conversation about their religion. The goal of the gathering is to create an environment where people can freely question and express their understanding of Islam and also meet local Muslims. The increased polarization in our society demands that we come together to get to know each other better so that we can create a community based on respect and understanding. Join us for a warm cup of coffee, cake, and some engaging conversation."
