"Office of Failure"

by Maxwell Flynn

A short story about a place with more to it that you first see. And yet with less meaning than those who work there understand.

In an industrial district of a city, in a state, of America there is a building. Now if you were to see this building, this large gray, dirty building. You would think nothing of it, and if you did think something of it you would probably think that it was some kind of storage facility for “King Plastics”. Based on the faded sign and the large shipping doors on one side that would not be a ridiculous assumption. And you might see what looked like trucks, or white vans with tinted windows.

There is a gray door on the street side of the building, inside is a reception area with a Pair of stained gray chairs and gray walls to match. There is dark red carpet under the reception desk, on the ceiling is the only clean thing in the room, what looks like a pentagram in gold. But not a real pentagram this is of a more intricate design, and is intended to serve the opposite purpose of the more common regular pentagram.

Behind the desk is a redhead, not always the same redhead. But the amount of zeros on their paycheck for siting in a dirty room all day makes them unconformable. They wait for someone to ask the right question, if you know what to ask they unlock the gray door behind them. If not they let you place an order for plastic whistles that will arrive late and in terrible condition so you probably won't order again. But they are very cheap so you hopefully won't complain.

But if you do know what to say they will let you into the back room. Containing an elevator with a keypad on the wall, where the code for the floor you would like to arrive on must be entered.

If you were to enter "MONOGRAMED" you would miss all of the really interesting stuff and arrive at an office, Large and open with white walls and glass walled conference rooms. There are many long tables lined with computers and chairs. This is where the scared people work to try and keep control over a world they will never understand, and you would be here to join them.
