Student Spotlight - Johann Macadangdang
Born in the Philippines and raised in Macau, Everett Community College graduate Johann Macadangdang came to the U.S. in 2022 to pursue his dream of studying abroad. After earning an Associate of Science-Transfer degree in Mechanical Engineering, he plans to transfer to a four-year university and eventually work with airplanes, machines, or motor vehicles. Macadangdang, the first aspiring mechanical engineer in his family, credits EvCC for its welcoming environment and his growth through Student LIFE and hands-on projects. “The skills I’ve developed at EvCC have made me a better student and person,” he said.

Tell me a little bit about yourself, including what you're studying here at EvCC.
I was born and raised in the Philippines and moved to Macau when I was 12. However, during a visit to the Philippines for the Chinese New Year break, my family and I got stuck due to COVID-19. That situation encouraged me to finish my high school education in the Philippines. I’ve always dreamed of studying in the United States. In 2022, I applied to EvCC and moved here to start my academic journey. In June, I graduated with an Associate of Science-Transfer (AS-T) degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Why did you choose to attend EvCC?
Everett Community College was one of the few colleges that allowed international students to study in the United States during COVID-19. Plus, my cousin was studying there so I thought it would be fun to go to the same college as her. Deciding to study in EvCC was one of the best choices I have ever made. The college created a warm and welcoming environment, even though I was far from home.
What are your educational and/or career plans?
My educational plans after graduating from EvCC is to transfer to a prestigious University to pursue my Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. As for my career plans, I am unsure of what or where I would like to work, but I am interested in working on airplanes, machines or motor vehicles.
What interested you about your area of study?
In my family, we have a handful of engineers, but most of them are Civil, Electrical and Chemical and I found their work really interesting and fun. That made me want to pursue engineering too, but I thought it would be pretty cool to be the first Mechanical Engineer in the family.
How do you think the skills you're learning at EvCC are helping you reach your goals?
The skills I’ve developed at EvCC have made me a better student and person. I’ve learned how to communicate effectively, be patient, look at the bigger picture, and maintain a positive mindset. These are skills I’ll carry with me not only in my academic journey but also in everyday life.
Describe the best experience you've had at EvCC.
The best experience I had at EvCC was joining Student LIFE. Ever since I joined Student LIFE, my college experience has gone from 0 to 100. I was able to expand my connection, learn more about the campus and community, as well as make new friends. I was part of The Trojan Activities Board and has really helped me in making myself a better person as well as improving my skills. Shout out to Lindsay Hudson for being the best advisor!
What's your favorite class project so far?
I have done countless projects while studying to be a mechanical engineer. This includes, balsa wood bridges, self-driving robotic cars, but my favourite one is making a two-cylinder engine in SolidWorks in one of my CAD classes. It really challenged my creativity, and since it was my first time using the software, I was incredibly proud of what I created.
Who has helped you succeed at EvCC? What did that person do to help you?
Definitely my mom. She was and still is always there for me throughout every single thing in my life. She has taught me everything I need to know, and has never failed to support and guide me through challenging times. I would not have gone this far without the help and love from my mom.
What advice do you have for new students?
No matter how challenging your classes get, always remember to take breaks. Give yourself time to rest, reset, and recharge your mind. A clear, refreshed mind is your best tool for overcoming any obstacle that comes your way. Taking breaks is just as important as putting in the effort. And most importantly, don’t forget to enjoy the moment and have some fun along the way! Sometimes it's not about the destination, but the journey itself.
