Student Spotlight - Laura Vasquez

Laura Vasquez

Always curious about how things work, Laura Vasquez knew from a young age that she was destined for a career in space and aviation. As her curiosity for physics and engineering evolved to passion, Laura chose EvCC as an international student from Colombia because of the clarity of access, direct pathway to a four-year university, supportive faculty, small classes and hands-on learning. Laura offers this advice to new students: “Stay curious, manage your time well, and believe in your ability to grow even when things feel tough.”

Tell us a little bit about yourself, including the degree or certificate you earned at EvCC.

My name is Laura Vasquez, and I recently completed my Associate of Science Transfer - Civil & Mechanical Engineering degree at EvCC. I’m originally from Colombia and have been passionate about engineering and problem-solving from a young age.

Why did you choose EvCC?

I chose EvCC because it offered a strong engineering program with supportive faculty, and a clear transfer pathway to a four-year university. The smaller class sizes and hands-on learning environment really appealed to me, especially as an international student adjusting to a new education system.

What’s next for you after graduation?

I plan to transfer to a four-year university to continue my studies in Aerospace Engineering. My ultimate goal is to work in the aerospace industry, focusing on innovation in sustainable propulsion systems or space exploration.

What inspired you to pursue your area of interest?

Growing up, I was always curious about how things work - especially planes, rockets, and anything that flies. That curiosity turned into a passion for physics and engineering, and I knew I wanted to be part of the future of space and aviation.

How are the skills you learned at EvCC helping you reach your goals?

At EvCC, I built a strong foundation in physics, calculus, and computer programming, which are essential for engineering. I also developed critical thinking, teamwork, and communication skills through projects like the brick-powered car and beam design challenges. These experiences gave me confidence and prepared me for more advanced studies and real-world applications.

What is one of the best experiences you had at EvCC?

One of my best experiences was working on hands-on engineering projects where we applied class concepts to solve real problems. Collaborating with classmates, testing our designs, and improving them taught me a lot about resilience, creativity, and learning from failure.

Who helped you succeed, and how?

Several instructors at EvCC made a huge impact - especially my engineering and physics professors who always took time to explain concepts deeply and encouraged me to challenge myself. I’m also grateful to the Diversity and Equity Center for creating a welcoming and empowering environment.

What advice would you give to new students?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Build relationships with your instructors and classmates - engineering is not something you do alone. Stay curious, manage your time well, and believe in your ability to grow even when things feel tough.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Being a first-generation college student and an international student hasn’t always been easy, but EvCC gave me the support and tools I needed to succeed. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and excited for what’s next.

How did your EvCC Foundation scholarship support your education?

The EvCC Foundation Scholarship helped me pay for my tuition as an out-of-state student who covers her own educational expenses. It eased a significant financial burden and allowed me to focus more on my studies and projects without constantly worrying about how I would afford the next quarter. I’m very grateful for the support - it truly made a difference in my academic endeavors.
