Social Justice CAP Introduction

Everett Community College recognizes the relationship between climate change and social justice and acknowledges the disproportionate impact on low-income and underrepresented communities. Aligning social justice with the Climate Action Plan PDF icon results in embodying an environmental justice perspective. Therefore, Everett Community College’s commitment to sustainability is interdependent with its commitment to equity. Drawing upon the 5 Dimensions of Equity™ as the guiding social justice framework, Everett Community College strives to reduce environmental impact through six core action areas: energy conservation, food and garden, curriculum, transportation mitigation, resource and waste management, and student engagement.

We are taking this opportunity to acknowledge that the land Everett Community College campuses reside on are the traditional and ancestral lands of the Tulalip (ta-lay-lup)  Tribes, the Sauk-Suiattle (sock swa-ttle) Indian Tribe, and the Stillaguamish (still-a-gwa-mish) Tribe of Indians.

The main campus is built upon the ancestral territory of the Hibulb (hee-bulb) Village, which once stood as a rich cultural, economic, and political center for the Snohomish (sna-hoe-mish) Tribe.  After the arrival of European Americans, the Snohomish (sna-hoe-mish) people, along with several other tribal nations, negotiated the Treaty of Point Elliott and relocated to what is now the Tulalip (tuh-lay-luhp) Reservation.

By remembering the nations who have been here since time immemorial, we acknowledge the truth of our past and join together in building bridges of understanding and collaboration for the empowerment of indigenous students and their communities.

Everett Community College commits to raising campus and community awareness regarding sustainability issues and supports the implementation and maintenance of a wide range of sustainable practices. The integration of sustainability into all aspects of campus life, including educating, benefits all members of the campus community and leads to creating a responsible citizenry.

EvCC's Climate Action Plan: 6 Core Action Areas

The EvCC Climate Action Plan, adopted in 2009 and revised in 2013 and 2020, puts Everett Community College on the path to reduce overall college-related emissions by 2030.
