A worker sets up an orange construction zone sign that says "ZIPPER MERGE AHEAD" on the side of a road. A nearby pole has an Everett Community College banner on it.The four-month closure of northbound SR 529 Snohomish River Bridge between north Everett near Everett Community College’s campus and Marysville is scheduled to begin Sunday, June 2, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Here’s more information from the DOT: Work actually will start at 10 p.m. Saturday, June 1, when both directions of SR 529 will close overnight so crews can reconfigure the southbound SR 529 Snohomish River Bridge to one lane in each direction and put the crossover in place.

The City of Everett has taken several actions to reduce the inevitable impacts this closure will have on traffic. Drivers are encouraged to use the “zipper merge,” or late merge, on North Broadway, which runs through EvCC’s campus. Watch WSDOT’s instructional video explaining the zipper merge, or “merge late, cooperate!”

These closures are part of large projects to repair the bridges on SR 529 and improve traffic between Everett and Marysville. There will be many temporary road closures through 2025, and we will make every effort to receive timely details from DOT and share them with you.
