Student Spotlight - Fatou Jaiteh

First generation alumni and mom Fatou Jaiteh is one of the first students to earn a bachelor’s degree at Everett Community College. “From my associate degree to my BAS (Bachelor of Applied Science) in Accounting, this experience has shaped me in ways I never imagined,” says Fatou, who plans to use her knowledge to create a secure future for her family. “I’m eager to grow professionally and make meaningful contributions in my field.”

Why did you choose EvCC to get your BAS?

Everett Community College has been more than just an academic institution, it’s been a place where I’ve grown and found support. I did my associate degree here and saw how much they care about students. As a first-generation college graduate and a new mom, I needed a place that understood my journey, and EvCC gave me the encouragement and flexibility to keep going.

What were you studying at EvCC within the BAS program?

I studied Accounting because it matches my skills and career goals. No matter the industry, managing money is key, and this degree helps me build the knowledge I need to create a secure future for my family.

Who helped you succeed at EvCC (faculty member, staff, etc.)? What did that person do to help you?

I am truly thankful for my professors, classmates, and advisor. My teachers took time to explain things and made sure I understood the material. My classmates supported me, both academically and emotionally, reminding me that I wasn’t alone. My advisor kept me on track and gave me the confidence to push through tough moments.

Describe the best experience you had at EvCC.

One of my favorite memories is working on a group project with my classmates. It showed me that learning isn’t just about books. It’s about teamwork, growth, and seeing things from different perspectives. The friendships I built during those moments made my time at EvCC even more meaningful.

What advice do you have for new students?

Use the support around you. Ask questions, connect with classmates, and take advantage of the resources EvCC offers. As a first-generation student, I learned that asking for help is a sign of strength. You’re capable of more than you think, and EvCC is here to help you succeed.

What do you wish you'd known about EvCC sooner?

I wish I had known how helpful the faculty and advisors really are. Their support made a huge difference, and if I had realized that earlier, I would have been even more confident from the start.

What do you plan to do next?

I plan to use my accounting degree to grow in my career. But this journey isn’t just about work—it’s about making sure I can be there for my family while doing something I love. Balancing motherhood and school wasn’t easy, but it’s shown me how determined I am to build a successful and fulfilling future.

Anything else you want to add?

I am so grateful for everyone who helped me succeed at EvCC. From my associate degree to my BAS in Accounting, this experience has shaped me in ways I never imagined. As a first-generation college graduate and a first-time mom, I hope my story inspires others who are juggling school and family. The friendships, lessons, and memories I’ve gained will stay with me forever.

What’s next after graduation?

I intend to pursue a master’s degree while seeking a role in accounting that allows me to expand my expertise. I’m eager to grow professionally and make meaningful contributions in my field.
