Student Spotlight - Samuel Kabeya

Samuel Kabeya, Everett Community College’s (EvCC) 2025 commencement speaker, has been fascinated by how things are built since childhood. After arriving in the U.S. in 2022, he found direction at EvCC, gaining technical skills, leadership experience and the support to pursue his engineering degree. “College can be challenging, especially in the beginning, but if you stay focused on your goals and ask for help, you’ll grow more than you ever imagined,” he says.
Tell us a little bit about yourself, including the degree or certificate you earned at EvCC.
My name is Samuel Mutelesi Kabeya, and I’m originally from Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. I recently earned an Associate of Science – Transfer Degree in Engineering (MRP:Civil/Mechanical) from Everett Community College. I’ve always been drawn to how things are built and how they work. This curiosity started early and has only grown stronger over time. Coming to the U.S. in 2022, I set out with a clear vision to become a civil engineer, and my time at EvCC helped turn that vision into direction and purpose.
Why did you choose EvCC?
I chose EvCC because of its strong engineering transfer program, supportive academic environment, and resources available for international students. I wanted a place where I could thrive both academically and personally, and EvCC offered the right combination of challenge and support to help me grow.
What’s next for you after graduation?
I’ve applied for Optional Practical Training (OPT) and am actively seeking an internship to gain real-world experience in civil or mechanical engineering. I’m also planning to transfer to a four-year university to complete my bachelor’s degree. My long-term vision is to contribute to innovative and sustainable infrastructure that improves people’s daily lives and supports growing communities.
What inspired you to pursue your area of interest?
It all started with the TV show MacGyver that sparked my curiosity for how things work. As a child, watching him solve wild problems with science and duct tape made me believe that engineering could fix anything, though I’ve since learned there’s a little more math involved than I expected! Still, that early spark of curiosity led me to pursue real-world problem solving through civil engineering.
How are the skills you learned at EvCC helping you reach your goals?
As a full-time student, I developed strong technical skills in mathematics, physics and engineering design. I also learned time management, critical thinking and how to work effectively in teams. EvCC equipped me with both the academic foundation and the mindset needed to succeed in a competitive field like engineering.
What is one of the best experiences you had at EvCC?
One of the most meaningful experiences was being selected to give the commencement speech. Sharing my message on “The Power of Your Vision” with my fellow graduates was a proud moment that reminded me how far I’ve come and how vision can carry us through even the toughest challenges.
Who helped you succeed, and how?
I was supported by many people along the way: dedicated instructors who believed in me, classmates who encouraged me, and college staff who offered guidance and resources. Their collective support helped me stay focused and motivated throughout my journey.
What advice would you give to new students?
Don’t be afraid to dream big. College can be challenging, especially in the beginning, but if you stay focused on your goals and ask for help when you need it, you’ll grow more than you ever imagined. Your vision is powerful, trust it.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
As a full-time international student, my experience at EvCC was transformative. I came here with a vision, and thanks to the support and opportunities I received, I’ve seen that vision start to take shape. I hope my story encourages others to stay committed to their goals, no matter where they start.
How did your EvCC Foundation scholarship support your education?
Receiving a scholarship from the EvCC Foundation helped reduce the financial pressure of tuition and supplies, allowing me to stay focused on my studies as a full-time student. It was generous support that made a meaningful impact on my academic journey.
