Film Screening - The Wind Rises
Friday, May 19th, Jackson Center Auditorium. 
Doors 5:30 PM.  Pre-talk 6:00 PM.  Film 6:30 PM.

Bring a box of tissue and join us for a screening of the sweeping drama The Wind Rises.  An aviation-obsessed Japanese engineer named Jiro Horikoshi spends years building his dream plane, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero, but is horrified to discover that it will be used for combat in World War II.  Drinks and snacks on sale by EvCC Japanese Club.  Cash or check only please.

Taiko Performance
1:00PM to 2:00PM Saturday, May 20th, @ Jackson Auditorium

Join OKK Chijinshuu for a fantastic performance of Okinawan folk dance and drumming.  This exciting and enthusiastic group promotes friendship with the goal of handing down their cultural heritage by introducing traditional music, dances, and folk crafts.



Tea Ceremonies at the EvCC Japanese Tea Room
Everett Community College Nippon Business Institute has a beautiful tea room on campus which overlooks a Japanese garden. JAMAF 2017 provides the opportunity to experience authentic Japanese tea in an elegant setting.

  • There are three tea sessions: Friday at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM; and Saturday at 2:00 PM.
  • Sessions include a tour of the Japanese garden, and on Friday only, shakuhachi music by Christopher Nickels. 
  • Tickets are $10, limit one per person, and must be purchased day of.
  • Space is limited to 20 seats per session.
  • Friday session sales start at 10:30 AM in the Nippon Business Institute lobby. 
  • Saturday session sales start at 10:30 AM at the Jackson Center Information Booth.
  • Cash or check only please.


Yukata Booth
Saturday May 20th, 10 AM to 4 PM, GWH 1st floor lobby

Get dressed up in fantastic yukata (summer kimono) and take a selfie!  All ages welcome.  Yukata booth will  be extra special this year as we are pleased to welcome three guests from Japan who specialize in kimono dressing: Chie Lee; Kayo Kato, and Mika Murasa.  Read our guests' introductions online here.

Also at Yukata booth are haori for sale.  Haori 羽織 (pronounced "hah-ohree") are traditional Japanese jackets worn over kimono. Everyone can enjoy haori and they look fabulous with any ensemble. Just put it on over your favorite outfit and you’re ready to go.  We have haori of various colors and kinds. Get yours before they disappear. Proceeds go to keep JAMAF free.


Manga Swap
Saturday May 20th, 10 AM to 4 PM, GWH 1st floor lobby

Team Sakura-Con's Manga Swap will be returning to JAMAF 2017!   Dust off your old manga and trade for something new.  Hundreds of books to choose from in English and Japanese.  Exchange rate: 1 for 1. Please note: Manga Swap cannot sell items.  Trades only.



Cosplay Competition
3:00PM to 4:00PM Saturday, May 20th, @ Jackson Auditorium

We love cosplay. You love cosplay.  JAMAF 2017 is pleased to announce its 1st Cosplay Competition.  Cosplays at all levels and from all fandoms are welcome.  Individuals and groups may apply.  See application instructions for below for more details about procedure and policy.

The contest will be judged by JAMAF 2017 guest of honor, award winning manga artist Yoshimi Kurata; EvCC anime/manga history instructor Keith Takechi; EvCC eLearning coordinator and cosplayer extraordinaire Hannah Lovett, and EvCC Japanese Club president and veteran cosplay Miranda Heggie. 

Application Instructions:

  • Sign-ups will be held on Saturday, May 20th, at the Jackson Center Info-Desk starting at 10:30 AM directly after opening ceremony.
  • There are 20 spots and 5 waitlist spots.First-come, first-serve.
  • Sign-ups close at 3:00 PM or when full.
  • All applicants must meet in the Jackson Center senate room at 3:00 PM.Only contestants will be admitted.No entourages please.
  • No-shows are disqualified at 3:15 PM according to the room clock.No exceptions.
  • At 3:15 PM, if there are no-shows on the main list, we will draw from waitlist spots in order of application.
  • At 3:15 all confirmed contestants will participate in a mandatory group training.More information about the program, code of conduct, and judgment criteria will be shared at this time.
  • Confirmed contestants must remain in the Jackson Senate Room.Final roll call and line-ups will be held at 3:45 PM.Anyone not present at final call will be disqualified.
  • Prizes include a 3-month Crunchyroll Streaming Certificate (1 per group) and a mystery prize bag (1 per group)

IMPORTANT - Cosplay weapon props not permitted!
The EvCC campus policy on weapons does not permit toys or facsimiles.  As such, cosplay weapon props of all kinds (swords, guns, staffs, brass knuckles, staffs, giant wooden spoons, etc.) are not permitted.  Basically, if it could be mistaken for a weapon, don’t bring it.  If you bring such a prop you will be required to store it in your car or at Cosplay Coat-Check.
