Program Map for Written Arts AFA
This program is for students seeking an Associate of Fine Arts in the Written Arts. It can also be part of a transfer degree for students seeking a bachelor’s degree in English Literature & Creative Writing. Students seeking a self-contained program should opt for the AFA. (The AFA is also suitable for students who intend to see a B.B. closer to home, at WSU Everett or UW Bothell.) Students intending to transfer to another 4-year institution should pursue the DTA.
Pathway Options:
- Two year completion: Associate in Fine Arts (AFA) –a unique program in WA State

Four Year Transfer:
- AFA for transfer to WSU Everett Communications Studies Program
- AFA for transfer to UW Bothell Interdisciplinary Arts
- AFA/DTA English for transfer to any other school

Before you can take your college-level courses, you may need to complete prerequisites. Students who opt for the AFA can usually begin on degree requirements immediately, without departmental courses. Those seeking the DTA will follow the traditional pathway for English/Humanities interests.

Prepare for college-level math
If your math placement is below MATH& 107, you’ll need to take the following sequence of courses, starting from the level you placed into:
- TS 60 → TS 70 → MATH/TS 76 → MATH/TS 86
Prepare for college-level English
If your English placement is below ENGL& 101, you’ll need to take following sequence of courses, starting from the level you placed into:
- ENGL/TS/AEP 97 → ENGL/TS/AEP 98
Note: English language learners may need additional courses before ENGL/TS 97 depending on their placement.
Take COLL 101 - College Success in your first quarter to prepare for the pace and rigor of college.
Before registering each quarter, check your Degree Planner to see what classes you should take to stay on track. See your faculty program advisor with any questions you have.
Recommended Actions
- Looking for more support and assistance by phone, tablet, or computer? Visit the Online Student Support and Resources page.
- Do you qualify for Financial Aid? Fill out a FAFSA or WASFA and visit the Financial Aid Office to begin talking about how to pay for college.
- Visit the Tutoring Center, Writing Center, and the Library.
- Consider registering for a study skills class offered by DEVED department.
- Get involved with Student LIFE and join a campus club, such as the Writing club.
- See if you qualify for TRiO, MESA, scholarships, or support from CDS
Complete college-level courses. Focus on those that fit in the Written Arts AFA Pathway so that if you change to another Associate of Arts program, most of the credits you’ve earned already will apply to your new goal.
Take MATH& 107 - Math in Society or PHIL& 120 - Symbolic or MATH& 141 - Precalculus I: College Algebra or higher.
Note: The prerequisite for MATH& 141 is MATH 96 - Intermediate Algebra for Precalculus
Take ENGL& 101 - English Composition I
Take ENGL& 102 - English Composition II or ENGL 105- Creative Nonfiction
Take ENGL 106 - Poetry I
Take ENGL 108 - Fiction I
Note: ENGL 105, 106, 108, and 110 are all the first classes of multi-part sequences. The goal is to sample all of the sequences and complete at least one.
Recommended Actions
Check back in with your faculty program advisor to discuss if this is the right program for you and update your plan of study as needed.
- If you haven't already, join a club that aligns with your interest, such as the Writing Club.
- Read books in your preferred genre
- Begin attending literary events wherever possible
Complete specific degree requirements and begin preparing for graduation and/or transfer. If you change to another program in this phase, some credits earned may not apply to your new program.
Complete at least one of the core sequences:
- ENGL 105 / 165 / 205 – Creative Nonfiction (offered most quarters)
- ENGL 106 / 166 / 206 – Poetry Writing (offered every quarter)
- ENGL 108 / 168 / 208 – Fiction Writing (offered every quarter)
- ENGL 109 – Screen & Playwriting (only offered fall quarter)
- ENGL 110/210 – Editing & Publication (offered only spring quarter)
Take an additional humanities course outside of the English department.
Take a social sciences course
Take a Natural Science Course (Part A or B)
Take two English Literature courses
Recommended Actions
Check back in with your faculty program advisor to discuss transfer options and career opportunities
- Read across genres
- Submit creative work to Vibrations magazine
- Take the Editing & publishing class in order to assist in producing Vibrations and Poetry NW
- The goal in this phase is to sample each sequence and to complete at least one full sequence.
Complete all remaining degree/certificate requirements before you graduate and/or transfer.
Performance Humanities:
Take three courses from the following artistic disciplines. They must be from three different subject areas: Drama, Music, Graphic Arts, Photography, Studio Arts, Journalism
Take ENGL 110/210 OR ENGL 299 to complete your CAPSTONE REQUIREMENT. Contact your faculty program advisor to create this unique course in your last quarter before graduation
Apply for graduation at least one quarter in advance.

Meet with your faculty program advisor to make sure all degree/certificate requirements are met.
