Frequently Asked Questions about College Bound

1. Question: What is the College Bound program?

Answer: College Bound is Washington’s early college promise program and an early commitment of state financial aid to eligible 7th, 8th or 9th grade students. The scholarship is a state-funded program administered by the Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC). It was created to improve high school graduation and college enrollment rates for low-income students. It encourages students who might not otherwise consider college because of the cost, to dream big and continue their education beyond high school.

2. Question: Who is eligible to apply for and receive College Bound funding?

Answer: In order to access College Bound, a family’s income must be at or below the amount specified in the chart based on their household size. The income chart changes each year and can be viewed at: https://wsac.wa.gov/college-bound

In addition to meeting the CBS pledge requirements, it’s important that students apply for financial aid every year they plan to attend college. To use your College Bound funding at EvCC, you’ll need EvCC’s federal school code: 003776.

3. Question: What is the College Bound pledge?

Answer:  As a part of the College Bound program sign-up process, students pledge to do the following:

  • To attend a community college or technical school, eligible students must graduate  from a Washington State high school or homeschool program.
  • Get accepted to and go to one of the over 65 participating colleges, universities, or programs  within one year of graduating high school.
  • Have no felony convictions.
  • Complete a financial aid application form, the FAFSA  (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or the WASFA  (Washington Application for State Financial Aid) beginning their senior year and meet income requirements

4. Question: How much is a College Bound award?

Answer: The amount labeled “College Bound” on a financial aid award letter will vary for each individual student, depending on the school they attend and other state financial aid they receive. College Bound will combine with other state financial aid to cover tuition (at comparable public tuition rates), some fees, and a small book allowance. Students will access  their scholarship through their college as part of a financial aid package, which may also include federal grants, work study, scholarships, or loans.

5. Question: Where can students use the scholarship?

Answer: Students can earn an approved certificate or degree at over 65 of Washington’s two or four-year public colleges, approved independent colleges or universities, or a private career school that participates in the Washington College Grant program. View the complete list.
