Voices of EvCC - Harry Spencer

Harry SpencerHarry Spencer graduated from Everett Junior College in 1947. He came to Everett Junior College after serving three years in the Air Force during World War II. During his years in the military, Harry flew 35 missions as a bombardier navigator on a B-29 bomber.

One memory of his time overseas is of the sloth bear cub from Calcutta that his crew helped raise. Eventually the bear grew to over 200 pounds and was flown to the Fleishhacker Zoo in San Francisco. Harry left the military at the end of the Japanese War.

Harry was a business major when Everett Junior College was located at the old Lincoln grade school. The campus consisted of one building, and he is impressed at the size of the campus today.  At the time Harry attended EJC, he estimates that the student body consisted of 90 percent ex-GI’s, and says that it was a close-knit bunch because of this. Some of those who attended with him are still in the Everett community, and stay in contact with one another.

After graduating, Harry returned to banking, retiring as an Assistant Vice President of Bank of America's real estate division in Everett.  A number of his family members have graduated from Everett Community College, and Harry believes that the institution is a good transition from high school to four-year institutions.
