Teaching with Poverty in Mind

Using Eric Jensen’s book, Engaging Students with Poverty in Mind, participants will learn about the seven most significant factors of poverty on student learning. Students will also learn powerful strategies that educators can use in their classroom to engage the students in their classroom, especially those affected by poverty.

Presenter Biography: 
Issa Elhayek has been an educator working specifically with English Language Learners (ELL) K-12 and youth at risk since 2003. His interest in education, specifically English language teaching, began as a student of English as a Second Language as a 16-year-old Palestinian Arab Christian.  In the past two years, he worked as an ELL Coach and Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) overseeing the facilitation of the ELL program at all schools in the Marysville School District (MSD). In July of 2015, he accepted the position as ELL coordinator for MSD after completing his Educational Administration and Leadership program at WWU. Currently he is the principal at Dunlap Elementary at the most diverse school with the most diverse staff in the nation with 90% poverty.
