Transferring Credits to EvCC Fire Science

Need to Enroll or Reactivate at EvCC first?

If you are not currently enrolled or active as an EvCC student, to (re-)enroll:

How to Transfer Coursework to the Fire Science Program

  • You can complete a transfer evaluation request form
  • For your official college transcripts, you can order official printed copies or provide registration@everettcc.edu access to an electronic copy.
  • If transferring professional certificates that do not carry college credit, make a payment of $33.70 to cashier@everettcc.edu and keep a receipt.
  • Email a copy of that receipt and scans of your professional certs, e.g. fire academy, EMT certs to the Transfer Office credeval@everettcc.edu and CC: firescience@everettcc.edu .
  • A Fire Science-EMS program member will then make a tentative review of your transfer materials and identify which courses you can next take at EvCC toward degree completion.

Once you are registered for credits at EvCC, the official transfer process will begin. For returning students, it will begin as soon as your transfer request is submitted and (if applicable) paid for. The official transfer process takes 6–10 weeks, so please plan accordingly.

We recommend that you next review the Transfer Guidelines (see next section below) and the current Program Checklist to get a general idea of how much of your previous coursework will apply towards the degree. Our program personnel can work with you to identify the first courses to take first (www.everettcc.edu/classes), which will allow your transfer request to finish processing so that you can receive an official transfer report. (EvCC will only award transfer credit to students who have registered for at least 1 credit at the college.)

Fire Science AAS-T Transfer Guidelines

Transfer Credit Limits

  • The Fire Science AAS-T degree consists of 90 credits. Of these 90 credits, at least 30 credits must be completed at Everett Community College, while up to 60 credits can be transferred in.
  • Of these 60 transfer credits, a maximum of 30 can come from professional training certificates (non-academic credit), while the remainder can come from prior college courses from other institutions (academic credit).
  • If a transfer student has reached the maximum allowable number of transfer credits but they have completed other additional Fire Science coursework that is equivalent to EvCC Fire Science required courses (see Program Checklist), while these cannot be awarded additional credits, those required courses may be substituted for other courses that the student may take at EvCC instead, subject to approval by the dean’s office.

Equivalency and Eligibility of Courses

If you are unsure about the transferability of any of your past course work, you will need to complete steps for a Transfer Credit Evaluation (see Transfer Procedure, previous section above) for a definitive answer.

  • When students apply for a transfer evaluation, they should state the quarter in which they plan (next) to register and attend courses. Transfer credit evaluation will be based upon the Fire Science AAS-T Checklist in effect the quarter in which the transfer student will enroll in EvCC and registers for courses.*
  • Eligible transfer coursework has no expiration date to apply towards the Fire Science degree.
  • For a transferred Fire Science course to apply as transfer credit for an EvCC Fire Science required course, equivalency requires:
    • an identical course topic (same name or fulfilling the same equivalent NFPA course equivalent) from an academically accredited institution and carry a minimum of three (3) credits; or
    • a professional certificate for a single course from an approved provider that includes a minimum of 30 class hours. A collection of certificates that each contain class hours less than 30 cannot be added together to transfer credit for a required Fire Science course. Examples of approved providers include the Washington State Patrol Fire Academy, Snohomish County Fire Training Consortium, King County Officer Development Academy
  • Courses transferred for credit as elective credits or as substitutes for required Fire Science courses will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Guidelines for Specific Courses or Certificates

If you are unsure about the transferability of any of your past course work, you will need to complete steps for a Transfer Credit Evaluation (see Information About Transferring Courses, previous section above) for a definitive answer. Please note that the following are all elective courses (see Program checklist).

  • Students who wish to transfer firefighter academy certificates must hold all four (4) certificates included in the EvCC course FIRE 100 Firefighter Academy in order to transfer:
    • Firefighter I
    • Firefighter II
    • Hazardous Materials Awareness
    • Hazardous Materials Operations
  • Currently, EvCC does not offer a standalone equivalent for Firefighter I or Firefighter II
  • Students may not be awarded transfer credit for both FIRE 100 (3- or 4- certificate Firefighter Academy) and FIRE 124 (HazMat) and/or FIRE 106 (ladder operations). Students who took these courses at EvCC or through an EvCC high school prof-tech program may retain elective credits for both. Students who hold a certificate for Hazardous Materials Awareness and Hazardous Materials Operations only may be awarded up to 5 credits, provided the coursework meets the criteria for equivalent coursework to EvCC course FIRE 124.
  • An equivalent EMT course must:
    • Train students to test successfully for NREMT certification (national registry), whether a professional course or academically accredited course in order to be awarded transfer credit.
    • Students whose NREMT has expired should plan to re-take the course at EvCC (EMS 151) in order to be eligible to re-certify and to work in the Fire Service.

*Continuing students who have not been registered at EvCC for 12 contiguous months or longer must use the Program Checklist in effect for the quarter in which they register to re-start classes. If a credit transfer evaluation was completed for a previous quarter using an older Program Checklist (even the quarter prior to enrolling), the same evaluation and awarded transfer credits may no longer be valid.
