Program Map for Music (Performance)
Individuals with a background in music perform in instrumental groups including symphonies, dance bands, small ensembles, jazz bands, as well as solo performances. This program specifically prepares students to participate in musical theatre productions, opera and operettas, and concert performance opportunities. Other career possibilities include teaching in schools, giving private lessons, operating your own recording studio, working for recording companies or even for radio and television stations doing sound mixing, editing and voice-overs.

Prepare for college-level math
If your math placement is below MATH& 107, you’ll need to take the following sequence of courses, starting from the level you placed into:
- TS 60 → TS 70 → MATH/TS 76 → MATH/TS 86
Prepare for college-level English
If your English placement is below ENGL& 101, you’ll need to take following sequence of courses, starting from the level you placed into:
- ENGL/TS/AEP 97 → ENGL/TS/AEP 98
Note: English language learners may need additional courses before ENGL/TS 97 depending on their placement.
Take COLL 101 - College Success in your first quarter to prepare for the pace and rigor of college.
Before registering each quarter, check your Degree Planner to see what classes you should take to stay on track. See your faculty program advisor with any questions you have.
Recommended Actions
- Looking for more assistance by phone, tablet, or computer? Visit the Online Student Support and Resources page.
- Do you qualify for Financial Aid? Fill out a FAFSA or WASFA and visit the Financial Aid Office to begin talking about how to pay for college.
- Visit the Tutoring Center, Writing Center, and the Library.
- Consider registering for a study skills class offered by DEVED department.
- Get involved with Student LIFE and join a campus club, such as Music Club.
- See if you qualify for TRiO and/or MESA.
- Consider non-traditional coursework options, including internships, Capstone projects, and honors programs.
Complete college-level courses. Focus on those that fit in the Music--Education Pathway so that if you change to another Music program or change pathways, most of the credits you’ve earned already will apply to your new goal.
Take MATH& 107* - Math in Society to fulfill the Quantitative Skills requirement for graduation.
Take ENGL& 101 or 101D - English Composition I as part of the Communication Skills requirement for graduation.
Note: You need at least one diversity class to graduate. Look for classes that include a D in the course number (e.g. MUSC& 110D).
Take MUSC& 105 - Music Appreciation
Take MUSC& 141 - Music Theory I (F)
Take MUSC& 117 - Class Piano - Elementary, Intermediate
Take one of the following:
- MUSC 110D - World Music
- MUSC 115 - Popular Music in America (W)
- MUSC 116 - Survey of Jazz (Sp)
If you are planning to transfer to a four-year university, check to see what the foreign language requirements are for your four-year colleges of interest. For example, UW requires two quarters of college-level foreign language (or two years of high school-level foreign language) for admission, and three quarters to graduate. WWU and WSU require two quarters to graduate.
Recommended Actions
Check back in with your faculty program advisor to discuss if this is the right program for you and update your plan of study as needed.
- If you haven't already, join a club that aligns with your interest, such as Music Club.
- If you plan to transfer to a four-year institution, check institutions of interest for transferability of courses, entrance and placement auditions, and proficiency exams.
Complete specific degree requirements and begin preparing for graduation and transfer. If you change to another program in this phase, some credits earned may not apply to your new program.
Take CMST 220*- Public Speaking (or another course from the approved Basic Communication Skills courses from the DTA) to finish your Communication Skills requirement for graduation.
Take MUSC 151-159 - Individualized Instruction in Applied Music
Recommended Actions
Check back in with your faculty program advisor to discuss transfer options.
Complete all remaining degree/certificate requirements before you graduate and transfer.
Completion of the DTA will also require additional Humanities and Social Science courses as well as elective credits. Recommended courses:
- MUSC 118 - Class Piano - Intermediate
- MUSC 124 - Class Voice
- DRMA 102 - Beginning Acting
- DRMA 130 - Improvisation and Sketch Comedy
Performers and singers are encouraged to take Italian, French, or German classes as well as yoga (PEHW 100 - Beginning Yoga or PEHW 101 - Intermediate Yoga) depending on specialization.
If you wish to complete the Associates in Arts and Sciences Director Transfer degree (DTA), you will also need to take 15 credits of Natural Science courses, including a 5-credit lab science. Nutrition and Natural Science courses are recommended.
Apply for graduation at least one quarter in advance.
