Worker Retraining

• Facing a layoff
• Receiving—or eligible to receive—unemployment benefits
• Have exhausted unemployment benefits within the past four years
• Temporary workers who were dislocated from a previous job
• Formerly self-employed, currently unemployed
• Unemployed veterans discharged within the past four years
• Unemployed or underemployed after having been dependent on another family member’s income, but no longer supported by that income due to separation, divorce, death, or permanent disability of the main wage-earner.
• A vulnerable worker (at risk of being unemployed) who meets two of the following three requirements:
  • Your job is not in demand. (See the Local Area Demand/Decline Occupation   list.)
  • You do not have 45 college credits.
  • You must upgrade your skills to remain employed in your current job.

Worker Retraining is also available to undocumented students who meet one of the above criteria.

Please complete the online Start Next Quarter eligibility survey  to assist in locating programs and resources potentially available to you and to register for the free orientation at end of survey. At this time, in-person Workforce Funding Orientations are canceled until further notice. Materials will be provided to registrants. Approved programs of study include GED, High School Completion, ESL, vocational certificate programs or select Associates in Technical Art/Associates in Applied Sciences degrees. Explore our List of vocational programs.

Worker Retraining only guarantees funding for up to one quarter for approved students. If you have previously received one quarter of funding from Worker Retraining then you must email workerretraining@everettcc.edu in order to request any additional quarters of funding. These students will be added to the Worker Retraining Waitlist and will receive notice of funding availability the week before the quarter starts. All tuition, book, supplies, and emergency funding is dependent on the availability of funds.

Workforce Funding Application

To increase accessibility and streamline our application process, the Workforce Funding Department has created a joint application for all our grant programs. With a single application, you can apply for BFET, Worker Retraining, WorkFirst, and the Opportunity Grant. Our new application is now available online and will automatically upload to your grant program! Download the Workforce Funding Application and instructions. 

Worker Retraining sets priority deadlines each quarter to ensure you have time to complete the steps required to become a Worker Retraining student. If you have missed the priority deadline, we still encourage you to apply. After you complete the Workforce Funding application, we will communicate with you by email.

2025-2026 Schedule

• Summer quarter 2025 - July 1, 2025
• Fall quarter 2025 - September 22, 2025
• Winter quarter 2026 - December 15, 2025
• Spring quarter 2026 - March 30, 2026

Our Employment Security Specialist can help answer your questions about unemployment benefits. The Specialist will also be able to answer questions about Commissioner Approved Training (CAT) and Training Benefits (TB) while you are in school. Please contact us to schedule an appointment with the Employment Security Specialist.

If you are enrolled in Worker Retraining and receiving unemployment benefits, we can assist you in completing one of the following applications to obtain permission from Employment Security Department (ESD) to attend school:

• Commissioner Approved Training (CAT)  allows you to attend school and collect your unemployment benefits without actively seeking employment. CAT is for short-term training that can be completed within your regular unemployment benefits claim (6 months or less). We highly recommend having this form reviewed by the Employment Security Specialist.
• Training Benefits (TB)  includes CAT and may extend your unemployment benefits while attending school full-time. TB is for long-term training (more than 6 months). We highly recommend having this form reviewed by the Employment Security Specialist.

If you lost your job due to foreign competition or were laid off from a company that has been approved for Trade Act, you may also qualify for the Trade Act program, which may provide tuition assistance and living expenses while you attend school. If you believe you may be eligible, please call the Trade Act hotline at 425-861-3704.
