Alumni Spotlight - Craig Barber

Craig Barber was inspired to attend EvCC when he signed up for a workshop called “Hiking High Hills,” led by instructor John Lindstrom. Lindstrom and instructors John Witter and Lloyd Weller significantly influenced Craig’s chosen photographic career. “Not only did they teach me the craft and expand my critical thinking, but they also instilled confidence and dedication to the medium,” he reflects. “Their enthusiasm inspired me then and continues to this day.” While he worked as a carpenter over the years, Craig always considered himself a photographer who made a living as a carpenter. He has had numerous exhibitions around the world and taught workshops in the U.S., Europe, and Latin America.” Today, Craig conducts his workshops from his studio in LaConner and offers advice to current students, “Believe in yourself and work hard.”

What is your current occupation/career?

I am a photographer and photography workshop instructor.

How did you choose EvCC?

EvCC offered what I needed in a photography degree program, including a workshop called "Hiking High Hills," led by John Lindstrom.

Do you think your time at EvCC helped you pursue your current career?

Absolutely. While I worked as a carpenter over the years, I’ve always considered myself a photographer who makes a living as a carpenter. My desire to pursue a career as a “fine art photographer” was achieved because of the direct support I received at EvCC.

What did you do after you left or graduated from EvCC?

I worked as a carpenter but, as a photographer, I devoted my life to the medium. I have been most fortunate in the life photography has provided me. Not only have I been able to pursue my vision, but I have had numerous exhibitions around the world and taught workshops in the U.S., Europe, and Latin America.

Was there anyone during your time at EvCC who acted as a mentor for you?

Without a doubt, the three teachers I had in the photo department were all a tremendous influence in my career: John Lindstrom, John Witter, and Lloyd Weller. Not only did they teach me the craft and expand my critical thinking, but they also instilled confidence and dedication to the medium. Their enthusiasm inspired me then and continues to this day, 40-plus years later.

What words of advice would you give to current EvCC students?

Believe in yourself and work hard.

Any other information you would like to provide?

While photography did not make me rich, it did provide me with a rich life--a life I have enjoyed and treasure.
