UNNATURAL CAUSES: Is Inequality Making Us Sick? is an unprecedented documentary series and public engagement campaign that challenges fundamental beliefs about what makes Americans healthy—or sick—and offers new remedies for an ailing society.
This is the first of two pilot community discussions to be held in Snohomish County. The evening will begin with a light supper and health screenings, followed by a showing of a 30-minute segment from Unnatural Causes. This will be followed by a facilitated discussion on putting equity into action. Action ideas that come out of these discussions will be compiled and presented in a report to health care organizations in Snohomish County. This FREE event is open to the general public. These discussions are funded through a grant from Snohomish County Community Mobilization and Washington State University Snohomish County Extension.
Unnatural Causes is already generating significant public engagement, policy forums and town hall meetings across the country. Public health departments and more than 100 other outreach partners are organizing events over the next year. Video clips, lesson plans and other resources, including a national events calendar, can be found on the series companion Web site at www.unnaturalcauses.org.

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month--join author Mary Matsuda Gruenewald for a special presentation.
Eighty-eight year-old Author tells her story of Imprisonment in US Internment Camps:
On May 16, 1942, under evacuation orders by the US government, 17 year-old Mary Matsuda and her family silently walked from Pier 52 in Seattle to a nearby train. They were among hundreds of Japanese-Americans threading past curious onlookers toward an uncertain future in internment camps.
Sixty-three years later, Mary Matsuda Gruenwald's painful story of imprisonment in her own country resonates, all because she simply looked like the enemy. Mary will tell about her experiences and sign copies of her book: Looking Like the Enemy.

This has been an extraordinarily effective way of bringing everybody into the process of communication and group live. Because we limit "cross-talk," the skills of listening carefully and learning how to remember what you want to say when your time comes are developed and exercised. But moist importantly, the talking circle allows you to explore a deeper meaning by experiencing a particular topic through the voices of other women. Meets second Wednesday of each month during academic quarters. Please join us!

“It shakes the body to its core. It’s layer upon layer upon layer of drumming and music and sound. The space will vibrate. The chairs will vibrate. You’ll vibrate to your core. And you’ll want more.” -The Idaho Statesman
For thousands of years, the booming voice of Taiko or Japanese drum, has called the community together in ceremony and celebration. Portland Taiko continues that tradition today
Taiko has its roots in ancient Japanese tradition. Today Taiko is dynamic and provides and experience that combines rhythm, movement, energy and culture into a single art form. The sound of Portland Taiko echo Japanese tradition derived from century-old religious ceremonies, court music and community folk festivals, and combines this with modern compositions and choreography.
“Portland Taiko creates a language that takes past experiences, history and memory and transforms it into sound, song and movement that will echo into the future.” -Chika Shirota, Okinawa Times, Japan
An exciting combination of drumming and dance await at this dynamic experience which affects both body and soul. Portland Taiko is an indescribable experience that shouldn’t be missed.
