Alumni Spotlight - Tyler Jahn

Tyler Jahn

What is your current occupation/career?
Currently, I am working as a personal trainer for 24-Hour Fitness. I enjoy working with people and helping them reach their goals as much as reaching my own. I also work part-time with my parents' company, Black Scottie Chai, helping them grow and expand.

How did you choose EvCC? Was there a selection process involved in your decision making?
To begin with, I was hesitant to go back to college at all since I had taken a few years off. But, I had a few friends attending EvCC who highly regarded several of the teachers. They encouraged me to return, so I finally took the leap. So far, I've loved every teacher I've had.

Do you think your time at EvCC helped you pursue your current career? How?
Going back to college has helped inspire me that I can do so much more with my personal training and Black Scottie Chai. It has given me direction and fueled me to try harder.

What did you do after you left or graduated from EvCC?
I haven't left EvCC yet, but the plan right now is to transfer to the University of Washington once I am done here. I'm entrepreneurial by nature.

Was there anyone during your time at EvCC who acted as a mentor for you? If so, please tell me about that relationship and why it was valuable.
I have loved all the teachers I have had at EvCC so far. My marketing teacher, Lynne Munoz, has always offered me advice to help direct me and make the time I'm spending here really count.

What words of advice would you give to current EvCC students?
Don't quit. I'm super happy to be back in school again, but I kick myself for not putting the time in sooner, thinking of how much farther I would be now if I had never taken time off. Give it your ALL.

The only way you're ever going to know where you stand on something is if you give it your all. There is a greater feeling of satisfaction that comes when you look back and all you can say is you tried your hardest. Whether it's from success or failure, learn from it, and don't waste time wondering "what if?" A lot of people don't give their all into something, and they forever after say they suck at math, English, talking in front of people, or learning another language or whatever it is, but if you didn't give your all, you'll never really know the opportunities that would have opened up for you, the life you could have lived, and the impact you could have had.

Show up on time. Preparing as hard as you can for that big presentation won't do anything if you're stuck in traffic, miss the bus, or couldn't get up. Don't let the opportunity slip by because you were just to tired to make it on time.

Remember, this is only temporary!
