Everett Community College’s Alumni Association selected Everett Police Chief Kathy Atwood and Everett firefighter Gary Parks as the college’s 2012 Distinguished Alumni.

The two were honored at the Everett Community College Foundation Leadership Breakfast April 26, 2012 where Atwood was a keynote speaker.

Parks, who died in 1987 while fighting the fire that destroyed the college’s library and student union, was also remembered at a service at EvCC Feb. 16.

“Kathy Atwood and Gary Parks devoted their careers to protecting our community,” said EvCC President David Beyer. “Our community depends on individuals like these two every day.”

Parks is remembered at EvCC by the bronze sculpture “Firefighter’s Plaza” and the college’s Gary Parks Student Union, which was named in his honor. Friends, family and firefighters gathered on the 25th anniversary of his death to talk about his life and legacy, including tributes from former college president Bob Drewel and Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson.

Atwood, who became police chief in July 2011, was born and raised in Everett. Atwood attended EvCC and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Pacific Lutheran University and a master’s degree from Seattle University. Her father, brother and sister also attended EvCC.

Atwood continues her involvement with EvCC by serving as a guest speaker in the criminal justice program. She credits the college for being there at the right time and in the right place for her educational needs.

“I am so proud to be a part of Everett Community College,” Atwood said. “I am so lucky to have the opportunity to go to college there.”
